Hello! My boar Wilbur (2.5 yrs) seems to have some eye trouble, it’s the first time for him. He’s behaving exactly like normal and has no other symptoms other than the milky layer over his eye, crust and discharge and also has his eye half-closed. I noticed it today and it doesn’t seem to have been there yesterday, I’m calling the vet tomorrow but do you have any guesses on what it could be and what I should do before I can call the vet (tomorrow at 9 AM)? Just conjunctivitis? Poor guy, I feel so bad for him. I tried removing some of the crust gently with a sterile swap and sterilised water which he didn’t seem to mind all that much. I attached a picture of his sick eye and his healthy eye for reference. His cage mate has no symptoms, but they live apart (in the same cage but with a grid wall between them) due to fighting.

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to edit the post - but I misspelled, he only has one milky eye and one normal eye.

That very much looks like ulceration most likely caused by hay poke.
There is nothing you can do other than get him seen by the vet. Eye injuries are considered urgent so in the uk vets try to get them in asap (they should ideally be seen within 24 hours of the injury occurring).

A fluorescent dye will be put in his eye to see the extent of the injury. Treatment is a course of antibiotic eye drops, pain relief and ideally some lubricating gel.

Hi

Please have your piggy seen for a potential ulcerating eye injury; it looks like a hay poke to me; ideally within 24 of you noticing since eye injuries can deteriorate very quickly but heal much better the sooner they are treated properly.
Vets have a special dye to see the true extent of an injury (which is usually much bigger than by naked by eye) under uv light and only they can prescribe the antibiotic eye drops you will need.

You may find this guide here helpful and may want to bookmark it in order to find it quickly in an emergency: First Aid: Immediate Care Measures and Non-medication Products

This happened to my piggy recently. He still had the piece of hay stuck under his eye lid. I did manage to get it out before his vet appointment. He had the eye dye put in which showed an ulcer on his eye. He was prescribed painkillers and antibiotic eye gel. Good luck at the vets. I hope they can see him early.

Good luck and let us know how Wilbur gets on
My Freddy had a red eye and the Vet used a dye and local anaesthetic drops and after ruling out injury/ulcer thought he had conjunctivitis - after 5 days of eye gel it was completely cured and he’s been fine since

I have a Freddie too! I’m glad yours felt better so soon. It turns out he had a pretty big laceration in his eye, so probably hay poke since it can’t really be anything else other than him maybe scratching himself. He got antibiotic eyedrops, moisturising eye drops and painkillers, we’ll go back for a revisit in 6 days. I am so relieved, thank you and (and everyone else else too) so much for your concern! ❤️

Poor Wilbur. He will soon be right as rain again. Sending healing vibes for a speedy recovery.
