Specialist My guinea pig suffering with URI - please help with diuretic dosage emergency

Instead I divided the tablet into 4 and dissolved one piece in 1 ml water and gave her only 1/2 ml at a time. I did a calculation like 40/8 = 5mg (she weighs only 500 GMs).
That sounds ok, I don't know what dose your vet told you to give. My vet tends to recommend a kickstart dose of 10mg and then after that we dose between 2.5 and 5mg. Your girl is small though so I think 5mg should work well.

Guinea pigs weights can fluctuate quite a lot during a day. So, to get a true reading you need to do it at the same time each day. Only after a consistent few days of weight loss can you believe there was a weight loss.
Thank you. Sure will check her weight same time of the day.

you my vet said start with 5mg for 2 to 3 dose and then go down to 2.5 mg for another 1 or two dose if needed. So I hope this dose don't do harm to her. Since she is underweight for her age.

It should be ok, just make sure she is drinking and give her extra fluids if not.

Hi friends,

She is recovered pretty well. She is eating well and drinking. She is back to herself. Walked to my lap this morning for cuddle. She is also gained back her lost 25 GMs and increase 15 more GMs. She is now 530 GMs. Happy she is sounding good. I am still giving her the antibiotics but gave her only 2mg of diuretic to be safe. I am taking her to the vet for check up tomorrow. also going to ask him when to stop her antibiotic. I called the vet last night he asked me stop the diuretic with today's night dose. How long do vets recommend antibiotic on piggies with URI? Now it is 2 weeks completed.

Although she seems okay the URI might still be lingering so the vet might want to go for a full 28day course, just to be sure

The vet asked me continue the antibiotic a week more..

And today morning when I refilled her hay, my girl started popcorning... seeing fluffy popcorn after a long time... it made me soo soo happy :yahoo:

Sorry I've missed all this, glad your little one is improving. As for length of time for antibiotics for a respiratory infection, I would say anything from 2-6weeks for a stubborn infection.

Happy update... I went to the vet again today morning.. he said she is doing good.... we took an X-ray. No congestion in her lungs. And didnt observe any enlargements of heart too. All normal. She is active now... all active again to escape from me and go to her hidey. Eat well too. All she has gain weight :yahoo: from 500 to 575 GMs now... I am very happy
