Hi all

Chips went very quiet Friday afternoon and we took him to the vet yesterday. Suspected UTI so now on antibiotics (co- tromixazole, oral) and upped his regular dose of Gabapentin to 3x a day (plus Metacam). Trying to get at least 40ml of feed into him.

Still deteriorating and waiting to speak to the vet (booked in appointment for today too).

He doesn’t seem to have done a wee since the vet expressed him yesterday. He’s not moving much but the bedding and his bum are dry, which is not like his normal self!

Any experience of not weeing and likely additional treatment options?

Could he have a bladder stone blocking the urethra? If so, this is sadly a medical emergency and he needs to be seen asap

If your vet is confident that he doesn’t have a stone, he could simply be holding in his urine as it hurts to wee

I hope he’s ok x

Thanks. She didn’t think he had any stones but we’re seeing her again within the hour and have just spoken with her on the phone and mentioned your suggestion.

HUGS

Fingers firmly crossed! I am very sorry about the bad timing. Bank holidays always make things even more difficult.

Have you been giving feeding support and has he been accepting it or not?

Thank you. Yes, syringe feeding from the first evening he was off colour. Sadly we had to take the decision to say goodbye today. 😢

Oh I’m so sorry. Sending you hugs.
Popcorn high over the bridge Chips ❤️

BIG HUGS

I am so very sorry. I'd been keeping my fingers firmly crossed for Chips. :(

PS: I'd been asking because the pain from a blocked urinary track would have been too great for him to accept any food, so it is an indirect way of judging just how bad the problem was potentially.

Oh no, I’ve just read this, I’m so very very sorry. chips sounded lovely and I imagine you’re devastated, you did all you possibly could. Take care as you grieve.

Thanks for all your messages. It’s hard to take in that less than 48 hours ago he was taking a little piece of apple from me and all seemed well, yet now he’s gone. We got our first guinea pigs ten years ago so have had ups and downs - please cherish every moment with your piggies. We’ll be keeping a close watch on his partner, Dobby, in the meantime. They were together at the vets and Dobby has always followed his big ‘brother’ around. Both about 4 1/2 years old, rescue pigs. Photo with Chips on the left (fluffy golden caramel)😢
