My new pig Miso is about year old according to his previous owner, I took a nap and woke up to a lot of sneezing and checked him and his muzzle was covered in blood. Once I got him out if his cage and wiped down his nose and held as much pressure as I could the bleeding stopped fairly fast. Decided to clean his cage so he’s not sitting in anything with blood on it and it started very briefly again but with pressure and a wipe it stopped again so hoping it stays stopped now. He’s still new to me and very spindly so it’s incredibly hard to tell if he has a cut on the outside of his nose, or if he got a poke on the inside. The blood is only from one nostril and it bubbled so I assume inside. Trying not to freak out because the car is gone for a service so I physically cannot get him to the vet right now.

I’ve never had a pig have a nosebleed before. Obviously I’ve had nosebleeds from the cartilage that bleed a LOT myself so I’m trying not to worry too much about him. Does anyone have any insight? He’s a feral little guy and I’m conscious of him hitting it off something now or rubbing at it. Also, I gave him some metacam as soon as it stopped and I probably shouldn’t have in hindsight since I know NSAIDs can cause slower blood clotting

Update, tiny bit more blood after he started rubbing at it. He’s acting completely normal otherwise also. His nostril is a tiny bit wheezy I assume from any bits of dried blood in it so not sure if him wiping it and triggering a sneeze is what started the bleeding again

In my experience, nosebleeds have either been caused by a haypoke, or high blood pressure. Best get your vet to check 👍
I’m assuming a haypoke in the absence of any other symptoms and because they’ve been eating an especially stalky box of timothy hay, but definitely will get him to the vet when my car is back or if there’s any more bleeding try to borrow a car tomorrow. Hopefully it stops fully

It's possible to be as a result of a hay poke to the nose, but it's worth checking for other causes with the vet if it recurs.

One of my past pigs, Linney, developed nose bleeds in old age. They were real gushers, mainly issuing from one nostril but sometimes backing up and coming from both. She would sneeze and splutter and blow blood in all directions, it was very dramatic! Because she was 6-ish we didn't want to push too hard to investigate so we never found out the cause, but she had on-and-off nosebleeds for the rest of her life before passing away from an abdominal mass that was seemingly unrelated.

I’m sorry to hear that! I was surprised at how much blood there was so your poor piggy must’ve hated it especially so often. There’s been no more blood since around 6:30 🤞🏻 but I’ll definitely keep a close eye on him. Hopefully it was just a wee hay poke
