Oh No, Lump?

Just a little update, I've had the two girls out tonight for a check up and a cuddle. No change in the last 24 hours which is a relief. I've made an appointment for 9:30 Wednesday so I'm anxious for good news now!

I'm a bit nervous as I don't know what will be said and if meds are prescribed as I'm still quite inexperienced with medications. Does anyone know what to expect?

They'd like everyone to know they're still pretty, lumps and all! Oh and snapchat even recognised Cissy as a person! :))

So I'm trying to get a bit prepared in case they need to drain anything or take samples. I've picked up some more Renasan for wound cleaning and I plan on cleaning the pigs out after the vet appointment.

Is there anything I should be doing in advance or anything I should expect from the vet appointment? I just hate going in unprepared in case they suggest something I don't know enough about. They'll likely prescribe baytril if they need antibiotics... I mean I'm not a fan of it but would it even be appropriate if it's a cyst or abscess?

^ Any advice for the above @Wiebke ? Apologies for the nuisance, just hoping to be prepared for everything for the vet trip in the morning.

There is not a lot of preparation you can do. I would be pretty surprised if your vet pushed for an operation and I can't see that your vet would want to drain anything, either.

Okay thank you! I'm just not sure what they'll do tbh.

Well Cissy looks very comfy there whilst nomming away :D Paws crossed for the vet visit :)xx

Hoping that the vet visit goes smoothly this morning, and the vet can put your mind at rest.
Eddi would like to suggest that you stock up on blueberries, because all piggies should get lots of blueberries after they go to the vet (or do anything at all really).

Thanks guys! We leave in an hour so I'll let you all know how it goes :)

Eddi is right as always! I actually have got some blueberries for the occasion :D

Thanks everyone, so I've just come out of the vets and it's not really the result I wanted to hear. With Tonks it was just the keep an eye on it type deal, make sure it doesn't grow but it's quite hard, she felt another teeny one and I'm fairly sure that wasn't there yesterday.

With Cissy it's likely to be a mammary tumour, as it's hard and grown so fast. The lump that's shiny with the black dot in it is actually her nipple :( It's leaking clear liquid when manipulated from her nipple but it's clear and free from infection. It's been suggested that it's best to operate to get it off as soon as possible.

For something like this I think I'd prefer to go to Northampton if possible, just going to have to weigh up my options on travel and such. I'm feeling terrible, my poor girl.

If you do come to Northampton I’ll collect you at station and you can come to mine for the day. Free any day apart from Thursday next week xx

HUGS!

I am very sorry that the news is not good. :(
Northampton is your best place for an operation indeed! My offer of an overnight stay still stands.

@furryfriends (TEAS) @Wiebke thank you both so much, you're so kind xx

This is the first time I've had to have one of my babies operating on so I'm really nervous and don't know what to expect. Would it be an over night deal? Especially hard as I don't know what kind of tumours they are. I'm hoping to book an appointment I presume for a consultation early next week and organise transport. Hopefully by car to minimise stress for them but if it needs to be train, so be it.

So I don't think I'll be able to get anyone to take me up to Northampton :( I'm really reluctant to take Tonks on the train due to her being so skittish with loud noises and generally being scared of her own shadow. I worry about putting them through all of that, 6 odd m hours round trip and the tube...

When it comes to these kinds of operations, what does it entail? I'm thinking if I go with my normal vet, what sort of anaesthetic should be used and is there more/less risk with ways to do it? She suggested a bit of gas and local anaesthetic for Tonks and general anaesthetic for Cissy as hers will be a bigger op. Does that sound about right?

I just worry about making the wrong decision and I don't want anything to happen to my babies :( I presume they'd need to test the removed tissue as well to see what it is? I would think they'd give metacam for pain relief, would they require antibiotics due to the area of the wound site? I'm thinking Cissy may need her nipple removed, would this cause extra problems? Sorry for the thousand questions x

Cissy will definitely be a General Anesthetic as it is big surgery.... but you are left with very little choice.

Yes, whenever our girls have had operations there are things you need for post operative care you'd need a supply of pain relief to give at home afterwards metacam for sure. Also Antibiotics are often given to prevent wound infection and a check up booked afterwards for the vet to check all is healing okay. I also always ask for Gut Stimulant such as emeprid (metachlopromide) to help the guts keep pushing things through. How good is your vet with piggies? Sometimes with all the will in the world travelling further a field to vets is not always possible.

What is the vet suggesting to do with Tonks lump?

Thanks so much Lee. I've usually got some metacam on hand after the various poorly pigs I've had but I'll get some more. Do you know what kind of antibiotic would be appropriate? Just in case. I'll ask about the gut stimulant too, I've got plenty of critical care but might get some Emeraid as well.

To be fair I can't fault my vets, they've been fab so far. They are a general vet but the head vet used to have piggies so has a soft spot for them. As I don't know anyone else personally who has had an operation for small animals with them it's still a bit unknown which is the scary part.

I'll be honest, I went to Laurel at the beginning and had a bad experience where she gave Bella tramadol for a scab on her back when she was about 4 months old so I'm reluctant to go back there. However the vet who's doing the op used to work there with her so I don't really know if it's a good or bad thing but I hope good aha. I actually found my current vet after that who fixed Bella up with some simple antibiotics and follow up mite treatment just in case that's what caused it.

So with Tonks she said I could do one of two things, leave them and see if they grow (hers are really small right now) or the best option might be to do a minor op without GA just LA and gas to just pop the little lumps out before they grow too big and will need the same treatment as Cissy's will. I'll probably go with the latter, just in case. I don't know if that's the right thing to do or not?

Sorry for rambling on, this is just so new to me.

The vet will decide on the AB to be honest. CC is always good to have on hand and trusty mushed up pellets too in case of supportive syringe feeding

I really don't know on the lump thing, i be inclined to do Cissy first then after she has recovered from operation do Tonks just because if you need to syringe feed etc... then doing it to two piggies can be really tough. @furryfriends (TEAS) is a superhero the way she does things like that! Especially if she thinks Tonks lumps present no current immediate danger. These are just my thoughts though, only you can decide which way to play this and remember the choices you make are always made in good heart, you never know what is down the line or the way things pan out. Hopefully they will all go well in this instance x x

I certainly wouldn't advise having two post op pigs on the go at the same time. I can syringe feed up to four at a time, but I really wouldn't recommend it! I have over 10 years experience of syringe feeding and do it almost every single day of my life. It is far better to concentrate on one at a time!

Of course, stupid of me not to think of that! Definitely easier to nurse Cissy back to health first, you're both absolutely right.

Oh I remember from when I met you Debbie, you're a pro! If only I could be as good as you with the syringe feeding! :))

I think I shall try and book Cissy in for Monday at my normal vets, I'm sure it'll be absolutely fine but it's so hard not to worry about the unknown. It's moments like this where I realise how incredibly important my babies are to me and how much I love them.

Is it better to take her sister in with her for her op? It would mean Bella would be there for a while so I don't know if that would stress her out as well? The other three would run riot at home :)) x

So today is the day, she's having her operation to remove the lumps. I'll be taking her in at 10. I'm so nervous I hardly slept. I'm sure there's nothing else you guys can add to your fantastic advice and comfort but I thought I'd update.

It's going to be a long day waiting, so I plan on doing the food shopping and cleaning the house in one day for the first time in my domesticated life :))

I've decided to take Cissy in on her own, I hope it's the right choice. I don't know if she'll mind or not. I still don't know if they'll remove the nipple or if there might be any issues with that but I'll ask when I see the vet shortly.

She's such a cutie, please keep all fingers and paws crossed :)
