Ollies Castration

Abscesses can literally blow up in hours at a pretty frightening speed, so don't feel bad, @KevinandCharlie!

I would also recommend using zithromax; it is by far the most effective with post op abscesses and infections, espeically where other antibiotics don't cut through.

Please also be aware that any abscess needs to heal from the inside. You have to be tough and peel the scab off at least one or twice daily, so any pus can come out and keep the abscess open so it can drain for as long as possible. It is not pleasant at all, but any little bit of pus left inside can make the abscess return. :(

Thanks. I didn't no I'd have to take the scab off. Poor Ollie.

I really hope your vet prescribes Zithromax, as this is the very best antibiotic for dealing with abscesses and should sort it very quickly. It is important to keep the abscess open, which will mean pulling the scab off each day until you are getting no further pus out of it and you can see it has healed. Abscesses heal from the inside outwards. Ideally the abscess should be flushed each day too, so please ask your vet to show you how to do this.

Best of luck!

Please see your vet asap if you notice a deterioration. Keep a close eye on the weight/appetite and keep the abscess open for as long possible,

Good luck little one! poor baby.
Oh god, this thread has made my stomach start turning about my boy getting neutered on wednesday.
I hope he starts recovering quickly, you must be so stressed :(

Hi, I'm sorry if I've worried you! Your piggie might be absolutely fine after his op. Luckily all Ollies after care has been free or I'd have a pretty big bill now!

Don't be silly! lol. aww, thats great. Well I hope everything improves & keep us updated on how well the baytril treatment goes!
millions of luck to your little boy!

Update- have been to the vet again Today. Poor Ollies got to go in tomorrow morning to have an abscess lanced. The one that popped is healing nicely but there's One the other side that's huge!

Owww poor Ollie-pig :( Healing vibes to him and hugs to you!

He's not having much luck at all!

I am ever so sorry! PLEASE ask your vet whether he will prescribe zithromax on your own responsibility to give poor Ollie a chance. Baytril is likely to not doing the trick. You will need to give double the dose of probiotics after the zithromax, but it is what saved Hywel's life when he ran into severe post-op complications.

Thanks I will ask tomorrow. Baytril seems to have worked on the popped abscess. I will ask about Zithromax though.

I have used zithromax several times and it has done the trick beautifully for me. it should also do the trick for keeping any more abscesses developing.

I second Wiebke's advice - Zithromax saved my Fred's life. He had a huge jaw abscess, we tried many antibiotics to shift it before my vet decided to try Zithromax it's very effective.

Poor Ollie is having a terrible time of it.

Abscesses can be so difficult to get rid of completely and are very likely to recur. Zithromax and lots of flushing will do the job very well but unfortunately few vets will prescribe it. I am more than happy to offer Ollie a temporary place at TEAS so he can get treatment from Simon Maddock, together with nursing care from myself. I make no charge for this service, although donations to the sanctuary are always very welcome. You would just need to pay for the veterinary treatment, which can be done over the phone, directly to the practice. I have dealt with lots of abscesses very successfully in conjunction with Simon. I am just worried that this is going on for a long time and it could really start to take its toll on Ollie xx

Hi. Thanks for the offer. You are quite far away from me (over 2hours) I will see what happens after tomorrow but if it doesn't improve I will see about getting him to you

Ollie is now home. The abscess has been removed. Looks very sore. I've got hibiscrub to wash the area. They didn't prescribe Zithromax they said to carry on with baytril and to go back on Friday. Fingers crossed for little Ollie.

How's Ollie doing now? I hope he's healing well x

Aww, brilliant news! I'm so pleased he's on the mend and counting down the days to being reunited with his family :D
