I've had my guinea pigs for awhile now, none of them have been sick and my guinea pig Patchy has had this small eye and big eye for awhile now. Were thinking she is blind (or will become blind) in that eye. She has never shown signs of sickness, in fact she is very curious and loves eating. So does she have a certain birth defect or will her eye get worse and get her sick?

Sorry if the images are bad quality I had to take them using my laptop because my phone was dead

I would get it checked by a vet. I've not come across any birth defects affecting eyes like this (that's not to say they don't exist though) but usually a protruding eye is caused by another problem such as elongated teeth roots or a retrobulbar abscess

Welcome to the forum

It’s not easy to tell from a photo what the difference is.
I always work on the basis that if I have any concern about a piggy I go the vet for a check.

Patchy is very beautiful

She seems fine, i've had her for 2 years now and she hasn't shown any signs of pain. I will get it checked though, since I can't find anything online about it.

Thank you, I'll have to plan to go to the vet to get it check out, but she doesn't seem effected by it at all

Hi welcome to our friendly forum.
You would be wise to get it checked by a vet. If everything is fine it will give you peace of mind.
Let us know how you get on.

Hi, totally agree to get checked by vet if unsure.
I do have one suggestion, hard to tell from photos but it looks like the ‘large’ eye has dark skin surrounding it whereas the small eye has light skin? It’s almost an optical illusion that the eye is bigger. My piggy has the same, see photo for example

They do both look normal and healthy in themselves to me, so it may be just a birth defect; but best have it vet checked.

In-drawn eye mean that the eye is painful (usually from an injury or major irritation in or on the lid (like something stuck under a lid), while bulging eyes are generally a sign of either glaucoma or a retrobulbar abscess (and abscess behind the eye); in both cases see a vet promptly!

When Betsy was diagnosed with the start of cataracts, one of her eyes was bulging and the other wasn't. The vet said that when a piggy has cataracts sometimes the eyes don't drain properly and that causes one to bulge for a bit then it goes back to normal. I had never heard of this before. I took Betsy to the vets as one eye was bulging after she had a mini seizure. The seizures haven't happened since and she bimbles about happily doing normal piggy things.

haha wow this was years ago! Patchy is still doing fine and the vet just said she had a small eye and was going blind in it. If it gets any worse she will get it removed but they said that she would most likely not live long enough for it to get that bad. We got this checked a long time ago and I'm super sorry I never said anything!
