Hello,

Pip is my digestive upset piggie and over the past few years has bouts of soft poo and low level bloat.

She has started one of these bouts of digestive upset today with soft clumped poo, gassy/bloat but this time she was squeaking and arching her back when she does poo. She doesn’t do it a lot, just intermittently.
She is also on permanent Loxicom for pain as well as I give a probiotic everyday.

I took her for her 3 monthly check up, a week ago and the vet was happy with her 😫

She is acting normal, eating drinking and running around. I weigh her everyday before food and she actually gained weight not lost it today.

She has had ultrasounds, X-rays , urine samples and poo samples and nothing major came up. The only thing was a small amount of slush in her bladder.

She is on a low calcium and low gassy diet and has been for several months.

I have booked an appointment in for Wednesday 04/03 but if I can I may book an emergency one in for first thing tomorrow morning.

I know about IC (I’ve researched extensively into that due to previous pigs). I just hope it’s not a bladder stone 😫😖

Thanks any advice would be amazing 🥲

Aw, poor girlie, she is very sweet. I don't have much medical expertise but am bumping and sending support 🙏❤️🐾

Ah right. I was asking because sometimes old piggies can just struggle with digestive issues and soft poop for no reason other than their body slowing down with age and not being able to cope with as much veg anymore. That probably isn’t the cause with her though given she isn’t older.

Do remember that you don’t want to go too low on calcium as that can also cause issues as much as being too high

Have you removed veg since this occurred again yesterday?
Does she have a companion from whom you can make poop soup?

Hopefully the vet will have some ideas

I’ve never completely cut it out. She is still on unfiltered tap water (she won’t drink otherwise). She gets a little bit of kale 1 to 2 times a week. She still gets those biscuits few times a week.

I’ve tried her with a little pepper to make sure that she’s still eating (which she is)

I’ve tried poo soup before with her healthy cage mate but it never helped (I did it for monthsss).

I don’t have an exotic vet near me but my vets are cavy savvy and they tend to listen to what I tell them in terms of medicine and care. So we will see. I managed to get an emergency appointment this morning so hopefully I get some sort of answer.

I’ve taken her to the vet, she could not feel sludge or any stones. She gave me meloxicam at 1.1ml x1 times a day. I asked about antibiotics but she would not recommend it as her gut is quite fragile at the moment so she did not want to make it worse. She said to give glucosamine supplements so I’ve got cystease. She said that if she’s not better within a week or 2 we will have to do an xray. She suspects cystitis or IC. She has no blood in her urine though

It’s good she has some good pain relief.

Cystease takes a lot longer than a week or two build up in the bladder enough to help, but you will have to see how she goes.

Fingers crossed for her

I know. I’m just heart broken when I hear her squeak. She’s acting normally otherwise.

If I keep hearing her squeak like this I’ll take her back in tomorrow or Thursday

I hope Pip is feeling better!
I am having the same problem with my 1 year 3 month Sow, Juniper.

She was making painful sounding squeaks when she did poos, and they were soft and very stinky.

After cutting down veg to a small amount, she seems to be getting better. She was also on Baytril and Doxycycline for a recent URI so her gut was going through it.

I swear piggies are so fragile, poor little things.

She is a lot better thankfully. I’ve cut down on veggies. The vet said to double the dose of metacam so 1.1ml twice a day for 1 to 2 weeks. She’s on glucosamine capsule twice a day mixed with probiotic powder. She and Ginger are both on a urinary and digestive supplements x1 a day each.

Pip gets super gassy and I think that was causing pain as she hasn’t squeaked since. Her gassiness has gone and she’s maintaining weight well. So I’m happy about that.

Guinea pigs are so fragile but I love them to death ❤️

Just to mention as well;
Pips poos are semi back to normal. They are back to normal shape and size, not smelly but are still a little soft. I reckon she will be back fully to normal within a few days.

She’s just a little gassy pig 🐹
