Poppet lived happily with her two sisters Skye and Toffee until sadly Toffee died last March. At that point she became very withdrawn and seemed reluctant to eat. By taking her out and feeding her away from Skye she did eat a little, but by the end of June last year she stopped eating completely. This has resulted in major dental problems.
However, Pops is no longer a sad little piggy. In fact I have never known a piggy with such a zest for life! Her weight plummeted from 1168g to 540g but she has never given up. She is unable to eat anything other than Critical Care and softened guinea pig food, and has remained really tiny although is currently weighing in at 680g.
For a while I kept her separately from Skye as I was concerned she might be stopping Poppet from eating, but Pops has made her own decision about where she lives. She has her own cage, but jumps in and out of it and goes to visit Skye, sometimes stopping for a few days and sometimes leaving and going back to her own cage within a few hours. When she needs syringe feeding she comes to find me, and if I am upstairs she will stand at the bottom of the stairs and shout loudly!
A few weeks ago I had been syringe feeding her and had left the cup and syringe on the carpet and had gone upstairs. When I went back down she was dashing around the lounge. The cup was on its side and she had eaten most of the Critical Care but the syringe was missing. I looked everywhere for it, and eventually found it in Skye's cage. I'm not sure if she had taken it in there to feed Skye or maybe thought Skye could feed her! The things she does never cease to amaze me!
Every week on a Thursday night we get her teeth done, as little and often seems to be working best for her. She really seems to enjoy her visit to see uncle Simon, and he gives her lots of cuddles and all the other staff there really love her!
I think Pops will always be a special needs piggy, but what she lacks in size she makes up for in character!
Not the greatest quality pics as they were taken on my phone, but thought they were cute pics to share with you!
