Sorry for moving my post from the pregnant guinea pig section but I'm really not sure what to do now.
our young guinea pig peanut gave birth to 3 dead babies on friday and now seems to have had a stroke. Her head is tilted to one side and she cannot stand up. We did take her to the emergency vets yesterday and they gave her antibiotics and anti inflammatory injection, i thought this morning she looked a little better but my wife just got home from work and she is just lying on her side and cant seem to get up. She also doesn't seem to know your even there..
She is booked in to see ellie tomorrow at Alfreton as she is very busy and we couldnt get any earlier appointments.

Doe's anyone on here have any ideas at all as to what could have caused this as this just came out of no where.
Is there anything we can do to make her comfortable and what is the best way to try to feed her.
i know its not looking good for her shes had such a bad time.. :(

Really sorry to read, hopefully there is some good news for you and thus piggie soon s you both have had a rough time

I would call the vet and ask for an emergency appointment today. I'm sure if you explain how sick your piggy is they will fit you in.

The problem is Ellie is a bit of a guinea pig specialist and its a 36 mile round trip to get there, even the emergency vet yesterday recommended we see her..so we are a bit stuck as shes not there today.
I dont want to take her to another vet and they just put her to sleep if theres something that can be done for her..

shes booked in at a different vets practice at 6pm,
if she has had a stroke is it possible to recover? i dont want her to suffer but i really dont want her to be put to sleep.
I have read they can recover just don't know how long you are supposed to wait.

I'm sorry I've not really dealt with anything like this @Wiebke @helen105281 ?

Head tilt can be neurological or ear mites but the other symptoms, lethargy etc don't necessarily match those conditions

just trying to understand how so many things can have gone wrong for her.. she seemed fine until she had the babies..

Ok thought i had best post a quick message. Peanut went to a different vets last night and we were told shes been through a hell of a lot for such a young small guinea pig. The babies have probably completely drained her. They dont know whats happened to her.
We have been syringe feeding her every two - three hours through the night with recovery food to try to build her strength back up, also feeding her water via a syringe , we have also been given some oral antibiotics for her twice a day
Shes still very wobbly but she does seem to be able to stand up and if shes near her hay and vegetables she will eat them.
The vet did say this could be her last chance to recover and we need to call them again later today. She did say there are specialist exotic vets but it depends on how far we want to take it..
I have taken the day off work to give her as much help as possible.. so fingers crossed.

Everything crossed for you, I really hope she perks up a bit. She sounds as if she is in good hands with you today - sending all the healing vibes in the world!

Thinking of you all. You've done so much for her while she's been through so many trials and tribulations. Fingers crossed!

Thank you,
ive built a temp C&C cage for them to be next to each other downstairs hoping that may cheer her up but it doesnt look like she knows boris is even there..

Sorry not been on much and the tag didn't work. The first 48 hours after a stroke are the most important if that is what has happened. Is she on anything like Metacam?

No sorry the vet just gave her baytril. She had metacam on sunday but not yesterday. shes asleep now but I'm almost certain she cant see or hear anything. Shes very unsteady and she just seems to stand in one place and is reluctant to move. if you put hay or veg in front of her she will eat it and she is going to the toilet.
I just dont know how long she should be left like that before its cruel.

Will be devastated if we have to have her put to sleep ive been fighting so hard for her..
This is the video of her when we brought home from the vets on sunday Peanut sunday afternoon
shes not as bad as that now but still not great..

Ok travelled to see Ellie in Alfreton again this afternoon. And have finally got an answer to all our questions. Peanut has a dead baby inside her which is poisoning her. It all makes sense now. When she was bleeding she had a Problem the dead baby could have poisoned the other ones and in turn was slowly poisoning peanut. We have left her in the care of the hospital and she is being operated on in the morning. We have been told she only has a 50-50 chance of surviving the operation but it’s the best odds we have. She will also be spade at the same time. I’m hoping the pet shop will eventually pay a big chunk of all these bills. Been an absolute nightmare..

I am so sorry you are going through this. Sending you and Peanut my very best wishes and healing vibes to Peanut.

I'm so sorry for the situation you are in. It's never easy when health goes so drastically downhill like this, and unfortunately piggies nearly always have a drastic decline in health so unexpectedly :( she's sure having a tough time but love and care can get animals a long way, and I'm sure she knows you're there for her. All the best for the op and recovery, my fingers will be crossed for her and Willow and Honey will have their piggy paws crossed too! All the best ❣️

Fingers crossed for little Peanut, you have all been through such a dreadful time, hopefully now you know the problem all will be sorted out soon x

Concerned that your sow may be suffering from a condition referred to as ‘Pregnancy Toxaemia (Ketosis)’, and/or ‘Hypocalcaemia’, which requires aggressive treatment.

So sorry to hear all you've been going through.
Poor Peanut - what a horrible time for her.

Hope that she pulls through with all your love and care.
Keeping you in my thoughts

Oh gosh how awful for her but she is in the best possible hands. Got everything crossed that she pulls through well

Just read this as my guinea had a possible stroke last week but see it’s turned a different way wishing you all the best and hope she comes through. They do go downhill fast but can be quite resilient little things too.
