Hello guys!

My sow Bear had a bladder flush at Christmas and subsequently developed a hernia which eventually my vet wanted to repair using mesh. She said she hadn't used that on a Guinea pig before but she is usually fantastic. I noticed the wound kept bleeding for a week and she said it may be fluid escaping and not to worry. I then thought it had a strange and bad smell, took her for a second check the vet throughly checked for infection but said there was none and to bathe in saline once or twice a day.

Few days later and there is a thick yellow substance in the wound which must be infection, took her to a different vet as mine is away for two weeks and they said Guinea pig pus is usually thick, she advised me to keep her on the antibiotics (sulfatrim) 0.25 daily and 0.2ml metacam daily, but she prescribed hibi scrub liquid to use and said to thoroughly clean the wound and come back in a week.

Me and my mum tried and cleaned it but the pus is so thick I couldn't wipe the majority of, now I'm panicking as she's been through so much I don't want this minor setback to make her unwell again.

She has seen a tiny bit quieter but is still eating and drinking and bouncy.

Any tips on cleaning this type of wound and what else I can do, I just can't seem to get the pus out as it's so thick and it's a relatively small opening that is left.

Any advice please let me know, I'm so worried it's going to get septic inside and around the mesh so I hope it hasn't already! I only saw yellow pus the last two days I have been checking thoroughly so I hope it is the exterior part only...

Sorry, I have no experience of hernias or the use of mesh but the best antibiotic for abscesses is zithromax which may be a better option here. I would discuss this with your vet. Also if she is not improving I would not wait a week before taking her back. I hope all goes well :)

Thank you I think another antibiotic would be a good plan as she's already on one so can't be working too well or wouldn't have got to this point I guess. Yes planning on calling them after a couple of days if it worsens or doesn't improve, thank you :) xx
