Hello, my guinea pig has had a small red lump at the bottom of her eye ever since I can remember, very small and looked like a small bit of skin poking up a little, but the past two days it's really bulging up and looks strange like an extra mass of tissue. She's got a vet appointment tomorrow but wondered if anyone can shed some light on what this could be? As I said she's always had a little lump but this seems strange.

Thank you in advance

Hi

Please see a vet for a possible conjunctivitis. When the conjunctiva is swollen,it will be pushed up from underneath the lid. The appropriate antibiotic eye drops should take care of it.

PS: We kindly ask our members to please not use upper case titles; it makes them much more difficult to read in our alerts whenever we come on. You are at a higher risk of dropping down the list with a difficult to read title than with an easy to read one while we do our best to answer the most serious health issues first.

Is there something I can do in the meantime while we wait? A ratio of water and salt to clean the eye? Thank you

Hi

You make saline solution by boiling 250 ml / half pint of water, cool and stir in 1 teaspoon of salt but you best ring up your vets first thing tomorrow morning. The saline won't be making a big difference.

Hello,

So the vet confirmed it was inflamed conjunctiva and has given metacam and antibiotic eye drops. She couldn't find anything inside the eye upon using the yellow dye. She also mentioned could be a possible prolapsed conjunctiva as she could pull the conjunctiva right out of the eye when examining. In your experience have eyedrops and metacam resolved an inflamed conjunctiva or even a prolapsed one.
Many thanks

Hi

Antibiotic eye drops for an infection and metacam are what I would have expected. Metacam is an anti-inflammatory as much as a painkiller and is used in your case to help bring down the swelling of the conjunctiva in case it is not infectious, so your vet has prescribed for both possible causes.

The conjunctiva had already gone down after one day... on the drug labels it doesn't say how long to use the antibiotic eyedrops for. They are closed for Easter. I will ring once they open up and continue using until that point but are eyedrops usually a course like they would be with oral antibiotics or is it until its cleared up?

Many thanks
