Hi, so recently one of my piggies passed away. It was really hard for me, and my other piggy to deal with. But, even though he was sad for the first few days and didn’t make as much noise and slept more he still ate his food (licked the bowl ahah) and drank water, ate hay, and had some pellets.

Now it’s been about 5 days since other piggy passed and he’s doing actually quite well! He is running around the cage, he makes a little noise but his buddy was normally the noise maker in their pair. If he continues to be good like this would I need another piggy? Because, in my neighbour hood there are no male Guinea pigs in the 4+ age range from any shelters, and when they are, their in pairs (which is good!) and I really can only take one in. And, I don’t really know if I even can at the moment if the right piggy showed up.

Of course if my piggy took a turn for the worse, and I was unable to get another pig I would put him up for adoption, but I don’t trust other people to care for him right. Most Guinea pigs in my neighbour hood unfortunately live in the small cages you buy at pet stores and live as singles.

I know if I had to for my piggies health I would, but if he continues down this path of being happy and eating everything, is that necessary? I would really like to keep him.

Hi, I am very sorry for your loss :( As for your remaining piggy, he may appear to be fine by himself but he really would thrive and be much happier with a friend. Sadly, no amount of time and love that you give is the same as another guinea pig companion. You say that your local rescues don't have any boars that are older than 4 plus but is there a reason why you wouldn't consider a younger boar?

Hi, yeah I am probably going to wait another maybe 2-4 weeks before making the decision.

And for the younger boar, I really don’t want to be caught in a loop, as in a couple of years I’m going to be going off to university or college (hopefully) and I don’t know if I could take them.

There isn't a rush to get him a friend if he is acting ok. I understand why you don't want to get stuck in the loop. Please do consider contacting the rescues direct as they don't always advertise all their piggies (especially not singles) on their websites
