temp housing?

Hi,that is a very good size for 2piggied.the bottom of the pen usually unzips,so can be machine washed at 40 degree wash.i I use puppy pads on the base covered in hay.change every 3days .

I would definitely say that is not recommended for housing guinea pigs for 6 months to a year. I used to have one of those for another pet of mine.

Perhaps for a very brief time under close supervision because it would be both a safety & health issue if they consume the material. One of my 10 would have a hole in that within days, if not sooner. Plus it can't be cleaned properly on a regular basis which would put your guinea pigs at risk for fungal or respiratory issues.

Do you have other pets? Small siblings? That would therefore not be safe, especially if it's flexible and collapsible if you have other pets such as dogs or cats or small kids in the house. All it takes is someone else in the household forgetting to shut a door and you have a tragedy.

Can I ask, why are rushing into getting guinea pigs when you aren't prepared for them? Why not take the needed time to assemble them a proper and safe environment first?

I’m the only one that comes in my room so none of the other pets will enter my room and I can always set something else up if I notice them chewing the cage and how is this unable to be cleaned properly? Especially if I use fleece
Also I’ll probably be starting to build the enclosure even sooner than 6 months I just used those as max times

Also they needed a home and who knows if the next people that wanted them would know how to properly take care of them or if they would of kept them in the way too small cage they’re coming with

I also use fleece. What are you planning to use as an absorbant layer?

Trust me, urine sometimes gets underneath because sometimes pigs like to burrow underneath the fleece. It's natural for them to do so and with that enclosure you have nothing to clip the fleece to in order to prevent this. Also guinea pigs spray urine (they often do this to each other as well as a way to say backoff) so it gets on the walls of a cage (or your walls if it's next to one) so your fabric enclosure will be wet if you try to clean the cage sides (or smelly and not a healthy place for guinea pigs if you don't) even if you can remove the bottom for washing. Wet or moist environment sets your pigs up for fungal issues. For the health of my pigs I want something that can be cleaned properly.

You never know if someone will take proper care of a pig, so I get where you are coming from, but the first indication is they are prepared with proper housing. Love and good intentions only goes so far.

After personally rescuing pigs myself (and currently have 10 rescues) I have seen some horrible situations where people thought they were doing right by the pig, but they got in too big of a hurry and the upkeep became too much, either because they weren't properly prepared or because they just didn't realize how much guinea pigs poop and pee or didn't provide proper nutrition (the unlimited hay or fresh veggies became "too expensive").

So, I encourage you to be prepared with proper housing, because it seems you have good intentions, and your pigs deserve a large, safe, clean place to live.

The absorbent layer will probably be a few towels or a layer of the puppy pads/incontenance pads and in my family you don’t get rid of a pet just because of the cost or care you keep the animal unless it’d be better for the animal to be rehomed

That's fantastic...so I am hoping you give them a proper home. You live in the U.S. and so you have a lot of affordable options for proper housing that can be prepared BEFORE you get a guinea pig.

Responsible ownership is different than just "keeping" an animal.

I thought you’re going to use the play pen? We like pigtures 😁
ETA: have a read on how to settle them and double check the sex etc. Good luck!

my two boys have never tried to chew the playpen, if you have a nibbler you can always buy a carrot cottage or seagrass tunnel. If you keep the top zipped over when you are out then I very much doubt a cat or dog would be likely to get in there x
Good luck for tomorrow, photos please x

Figured I’d post the photos of their bums here too Incase nobody sees the other post

Oh, the black one looks like a Male but not too sure about the white one? Can you get more close ups, there is also a sexing topic with photos in the guides, here is the link, try and feel for testicles and a penis ridge, how old are they?
Sexing Guide

You can keep them separated until he is old enough to have the op and also it would be wise to see if your little lady is already preggers

I feel bad for anybody that got pairs of pigs from the lady I got mine from cause she is really knowledgeable except for sexing as far as I can tell CSU’se she still says they are both females and humping is just figuring out the dominant

Good luck with the pregnancy watch. How big is that plastic box? And are you sure the boar can’t get to your sow?

I don’t think they can be neutered until then it’s have dropped. Hopefully about 3months to go.

Thanks the totes not as big as I’d like it to be size wise but it’s like 18 inches high

Please try and get a new cage for them very soon. They need space to run around. Preferably within the next month or two. C&C are fab, you can make them whatever shape you want 😁🤷🏾‍♀️

Yeah I’ll be getting them to the vet this week or next and I’ll be starting to build the big cage ((24 sq feet)) I plan to build soon

Pregnant females only start to look large in the last couple of weeks, so you may have a wait and watch x
