So I've seen at least two full blown arguments about giving piggies bananas and/or oranges off the forum. What do you think of giving piggies either one? Quite a few think one bite kills so I'm just curious :D

You're joking right? I didn't know they can't have bananas.. I've given my piggies banana bit hearing this.. But having said that there's been no ill effect on them at all. Never tried oranges though as I'd of thought they're too strong

Guinea pigs can eat either fruit safely (including organic banana skin), as long as you feed fruit (including tomatoes) no more than twice in a week in order to prevent the acid in the fruit causing cheilitis (lip infection) from feeding any fruit either too often or in too big quantities. One slice of orange or a chunk of banana counts as a "portion".

Most of mine like banana but not orange, They get it as a rare treat although recently Rosie has been having( baby food )banana mixed into her critical care

When I got my first boy Hazelnut, I tried everything on the fresh food list on the forum, including bananas, to see what he would like. He refused to try any food except carrots, parsley, baby spinach leaves, cos lettuce, redoak lettuce, mizuna lettuce & chard lettuce. I'd waft it all in front of his nose or bring it up right to his mouth & he would always keep his incisors clamped tightly shut if he didn't want it. For an 11week old baby he was a right fusspot. In any case, not fond of fruit.

At 7 months I managed to get 4 week old Peanut Butter to be his friend. He was happy to try anything but the minute he saw Hazelnut was not eating it, he would stop. In the end he went on the same diet as Hazelnut. They are now almost 4 & 5 years old.

Last November I adopted two 2.5 year old boys. Decided it was just easier to keep everyone on the dame vegie diet & so far they are thriving on it.

The only ones that eat fruit in this house is me & poochie! She LOVES sliced banana & tomatoes. I do remove the tomato seeds though as she is a shi-tzu & I'm somewhat afraid of her choking on them. She also expects to get carrot batons when the piggy boys get them!

Kiwi and Willow get both these fruits but only occasionally, which they are annoyed about as Orange is one of their favourites!
When they have banana they like to squish a bit on the side of their food bowls just where I put my fingers when I remove them! Yuck!

I sometimes give a bit of banana and maybe some satsuma, but never the skin of either. They either love it or loathe it. and I mean maybe once in a blue moon.
Have you ever tried them on kiwi fruit? Mine only had a bit, but are not fans.

Mine love most thing but they all go mad for banana! Especially Tyler my avatar piggy, will squeal his head off for it!
Wilbur, our latest addition, will eat ANYTHING. Last night I was trying him with little tiny bits of different fruits as I had one of those pre made fuit platters in the fridge that was past it's best, so he tried a bite of mango, pineapple, kiwi, and a blueberry (just a bite of each) and he loved the lot! Begging for more! I ruined his fun by saying no more fruit for a week now, lol ;)

Tried mine with a teeny bit of banana.. Pippin the fatty scoffed it & wanted more & Gladys wouldn't even entertain it !

Mine aren't too keen on banana, they tend to eat about a quarter of a slice and then leave it. I think it's too sweet for them as we rarely feed them fruit - usually just as a little treat if they seem particularly hungry one day. Haven't tried them with oranges though.

dont like the though of those sugers , there tummieis are already a
delicat unough,

there is warnings for humans , and there tummies are apparintly for more
sensertive
the only time i use a tinny amount of frute is to tempt a pig that is off its food
and then only a tinny peice to get them thinking about food

...there is no such thing as eating "too much fruit", with the exception of acidic fruits like oranges/grapefruits, as part of a varied diet in humans, as natural sugars are not harmful to your body in "normal" amounts. You're right that guinea pigs shouldn't be fed fruit often, but it would be simply wrong to say that you shouldn't feed guinea pigs fruit once in a while. Please try not to spread misconceptions.

lol :lol!:so my vet must have been mistaken when he advises no frut or veg if tummy ,poops are upset

and thats to say nothing for the tummy trobles i get if i eat to much frute :lol!:

try doing a google serch, for the afects of to much frute

You're right that you shouldn't feed them fruit or veggies if their tummy is very upset, but that's not what you said - you said you should never feed them fruit at all, which isn't true.

Clearly Gizzy was stating that all is ok in moderation and but not when pigs have a poorly tummy or have soft poops.

Like humans.. The last thing we are advised to eat with a bad stomach is fruit.

I'm not sure where Gizzy stated " no fruit at all.." but maybe I missed that.

Fruit can be fed in moderation. Just like us humans with sweets and chocolate. I don't feed any fruit as my piggies are on the Ic diet to prevent bladder sludge and cystitis. Too much fruit can cause ulcers, or particularly tomatoes which can problems with mouths. It's not to say they shouldn't be fed at all, but like most things there is a line as 'too much' :) But yes when there's tummy upsets in piggies fruit should be avoided.
