The Pigglingtons

Timmy and Freddie had a paper bag each, you can just see Freddie in the banana bag, he dived in there straight away and didn't come out for a long time. This morning Timmy's bag was stuffed in the doorway of his hidey, sometime in the night he had felt the need for privacy!

Not the morning I expected when I got up today! When I got downstairs the sound of rapidly chattering teeth greeted me. Duck and Snoopy were really going for it with Bertie cheering them on at the divider. I sat and watched for a few minutes, things were really escalating, aggressive yawning rearing up, lunging and boxing each other like kangaroos. I dropped a fleece blanket on Snoopy and got him out of the cage. I made a cage up for him and decided to give them a day or two to cool off and try them again.
Duck is looking more relaxed than he has been since the babies arrived and is happily talking to Bertie at the divider. Brillo has been asleep all morning in his hidey, he has been very irritated by Parker lately and has been nose punching and pulling his hair. Brillo is really not good company for Parker he is too old, arthritic and sleepy. Having made up another cage I decided to try Parker and Snoopy together not expecting it to work. They have humped each other every which way, eaten poop and hay together, washed, slept side by side, humped again and are now back to sleep bums touching like a pair of bookends.
I am now back to square one, Duck and Bertie relaxed together with a divider and Brillo alone, not that Brillo's even noticed yet! I will give this until the end of the week to make sure P&S will stay together this time and put out some feelers to see if I can find Brillo an older boy for company.

You have had an unexpected morning 😢 hopefully it’ll work out and in time you can find Brillo an older friend 🥰

Oh boys! Why are you causing your slave so much anxiety. Hope you all settle down quickly and everything remains calm.

Finally got to sleep about 4am when they quietened down. They are both covered in boar glue, Snoopy has some under his chin which I think may be pulling on the fur when he eats as he keeps rubbing at it. It's too close to the skin to cut off so he will have to put up with it for a couple of days until it grows out a bit. They are fairly quiet today (tired out I expect!), they have a small stool each to sit under, ever time Parker pokes his nose out Snoopy rumbles at him, early days so fingers crossed they behave. They were eating hay together just now despite there being a pile at each end of the cage so Parker can't be feeling too intimidated.

Had a thought about Brillo in the night. I remembered I had done this for him a few years ago when we had an odd number of piggies. I swapped his cage over with Fizz and Fuzz so he had has ground floor apartment, this afternoon I built him an annex! He can now cross the room and go and stir Duck and Bertie up. At the moment the little devil is going across, setting them off and wandering back to his main cage until they settle again and then repeats the process.

Duck how do you feel now your young charge has gone to live with his brother?

Relief, I can now relax and do what I want when I want. At least I could this morning, and then the hooman decided Bertie and I could entertain that Brillo on our side of the room, so it's very noisy again when he decides to put in an an
appearance.

He looked so relaxed this morning, shame I couldn't get a picture without the bars but I had to lean over Bertie's cage and I didn't want to disturb Duck.

I love Brillo’s walkway, it sounds like he is having a great time visiting Duck & Bertie through the bars.

Hope you have all had a calmer day.
Was woken this morning to hear rapid teeth chattering and step stools flying. Snoopy and Parker were having a row. I think they really frightened themselves because they have not left their hideys all day. I found a lump of fur in the cage but can't see a bald patch on either of them and no scratches or bite marks. I've put hay in the doorways of the hides and have kept a watch on them. Time will tell if they will stay together or not. I've had fleece here to make new cage liners for the last year so I will be sewing in their room and keeping an eye on them for the next few days.

Never a dull moment with a house full of boars!

They have both moved around a little and gone to the water bottles but start teeth chattering if they get within a foot of each other, it's not looking good but I have seen worse and Timmy and Freddie sorted themselves eventually and are still together so still cautiously hopeful. They need to start trusting each other again.
When they move round they are giving each other a wide berth now with lots of squeaky chattering.

Better today although very wary of each other. Every now and again one of them will creep up to the other's end of the cage, once noticed there's lots of angry squeaking a nose off and a retreat. Those hormones are definitely rising, the evidence is following behind them!
I got a pile of new cage liners cut out today ready to pin and sew tomorrow while I'm keeping an eye on them. A job that's been waiting for a long time.

Please can we use the power of the forum and send Brillo healing vibes. He's not well with noisy breathing again, not eating and has not moved around today. He was weighed 2 days ago and passed a health check, he's lost 60gms in 2 days so we are worried about him. He has a vet appointment tomorrow morning and I am syringe feeding him in the meantime, he's on Metacam already but tomorrow can't come fast enough.

Dear Brillo I hope he gets on ok with the Vet today
Sending healing vibes and love to you Brillo ❤️

Brillo has Baytril and I am to continue nebulising and giving his usual Metacam. I was hoping for something other than Baytril this time as although it seemed to work early September I do wonder if it didn't work quite well enough. We do have 14 days instead of 10 this time. The vet has quality of life concerns as he has lost 100gms since he was there in September but I think it's because of this infection which is mainly sounding in his throat. If he doesn't steadily put on weight between now and next week she wants him back next week if not he can wait to go back when the Baytril is finished. Brillo came home and ate 30mls syringe food, pea flakes, hay, romaine and cucumber. Not much wrong with his appetite! As for quality of life, the first thing he did when he went back in his cage was walk down the runway and annoy Duck and Bertie. He sleeps a lot these days but when he's awake he's bright as a button. He is 7 around about now and showing his age but I'm not ready to let him go without having a good go at fighting this infection.

Brillo stopped making the crackly breathing noise after one dose of Baytril so as with last time I don't think it is an infection ABs don't work that quickly! I will finish the course but I am feeling a bit irritated tonight, Baytril is hard on the tummy and I have been given the task of getting his weight up in a week or we have to look at his future when we all know Baytril suppresses appetite. I'm not sure I will take him back if we are going to have the end of life talk again when he is so bright. I got a lecture on how quickly they can go down. I know this, I've been through it. I've always taken my boys to end their lives when I've known they are ready. He's not ready yet and neither am I. I feel so low and a bit angry thinking about this not helped by having very little sleep last night. Fireworks were going off here sporadically until 2am. The noise caused Parker and Snoopy to have a spat resulting in Snoopy having a scratched nose and a separation for an hour while they cooled off and me having to supervise for a bit when they went back together. They aren't the best match at the moment but I'm hoping they will settle once their hormones have settled.

Sorry for the rant, if you're still with me thank you, writing things down helps.

I wouldn't want to go back to any vet either if they talk PTS when you don't feel that it's the right time yet. It's always your decision!

I'm sorry that you don't feel that baytril will help.
His symptoms remind me a bit of Pino's symptoms. In Pino's case, streptococci were the reason and baytril doesn't work against them. That's why baytril didn't have a long term effect on Pino.
Maybe baytril isn't the right antibiotic for Brillo either?

Just caught up with all the excitement. I hope Brillo continues to improve and that everyone can get on in their respective pairs.

I don't think it's an infection. I think he gets an obstruction which makes him noisy, he used to get it every couple of months and he would cough and it would stop after a few hours. The last twice it has gone on for a couple of days and I have taken him to the vet because I would feel bad if he did need medical help and I didn't ask for it. Both times the noise has stopped after one or two doses of Baytril which makes me think it wasn't the Baytril that helped, the obstruction has just cleared. I delayed taking him this time and then lost confidence in my decision which I now regret.
I did ask for Doxy which we've had better results with in the past but she wouldn't prescribe it.

We have a new tactic when Snoopy and Parker kick off. They come out of the cage for lap time one at a time while they cool off. They are not impressed but I'm loving the cuddles! If that doesn't make them love each other nothing will! :))
I really don't want to split them up, they are alright together most of the time. There seems to be a problem in the evenings when they get irritated and can't decide who's boss.
