Truffle and Polo

Dosing meds has suddenly become much easier (touch wood). But Polo is having these wheezing attacks every day. At the moment he resolves them by giving a big cough. I am not sure where this is all going. I think once off the meds we may be in some trouble.
Oh no. It’s very strange. Hopefully the vets will have something else to try. Sending love and healing vibes. ❤️

Do you go to an exotic vet?
Yes, we go to an animal hospital with an exotics department. It's a Royal College of Veterinary Science teaching hospital so the vets are professors and lecturers who specialise in exotics. They are very friendly and kind and there are vet students doing hands-on training who are keen to learn about guinea pigs. Most of the time you don't even need to get piggy out of the carrier or put him back, the vet students do everything 🐾🐾
I messed some doxy as I tried to give it to him in the cage. Today he wasn't buying the sugar solution with hidden doxy 🙂↔️ Sand I had to hold him to get what was left of the doxy into him as well as the Metacam, although the Metacam was much easier 🙁 So we had a few days of consistently good intake but we seem to be back to a slightly variable dosing, not good.

I've just caught up with your posts, I'm not getting notifications on several threads at the moment. I'm sorry you are having such a struggle. When Duck had a particularly difficult to get rid of infection last year the vet resulted in the end to 2 weeks of Doxy and Baytril together it worked! I really hope you and your vet can get on top of this.

Sounds like the university hospital where I see the specialist vet.
Sometimes I wish I could just talk to the vet without the students. :)) But it's a teaching hospital as well. And we all need future vets who learn a bit about guinea pigs.

I don't mind them. They are very kind to Polo, they called him a brave guinea pig the last time. It's interesting what the vet teaches them, I'm learning something too 😄

That's very interesting, thank you 🙏

The metacam and the doxy went down OK today, but I did need to hold piggy to administer them ❤️👍🙏

Ah sweet Polo I hope he’s doing well …..if only they knew it’s for their best interests ….🥰
Well done you as it’s very stressful isn’t it ? You’re doing great ❤️

That's true. Though I often have to bite my lips not to answer the questions that are directed to the students. Some are directed to me, some to the students. :))

Stripe sends healing wheeks to his bro Polo
Thanks Stripe, I know you understand ❤️ The vet suggested an MRI for what sounds like an upper area respiratory issue and check on the tooth roots. I'm keen but the MRI would be outside London and would mean travelling by train across the whole of London in the middle of rush hour with piggy. I can't see myself doing that, I don't even know if it would be possible to get there in time because of the congestion. Even starting out at 6am would be difficult because of all the stops on the way. And if the services broke down at any stage we would be stranded with a very big bill to pay. The clinic is in the middle of nowhere. And I am wondering if it would reveal anything useful. We are on doxy for another two weeks and have some metacam left, but the Metacam isn't really relevant to this, I think. They didn't want to swab while taking antibx as the result might be weak, which is understandable. Apparently X rays will most likely reveal very little because they are likely to be obscured by fatty tissue (even in Polo 😉) and bone where the problem lies, although they could be good for teeth. The MRI has sent me on a bit of a wild goose chase 🙁. I suppose an ultrasound for a heart issue check might be an idea. The vet did say we could renew the doxy script without coming in. It's all rather mystifying. Guinea pig illness is a bit mystifying, I think and not straightforward 🤔

He's OK, energetic and eating well. I got the doxy piggy backed onto metacam so another dose went down 🙂 I suppose if the metacam starter stops working we could try nebulising doxy if it gets really desperate, once or twice a day, but I'm hoping the metacam will keep delivering 😎 There's another exotic vet much closer and I am wondering if I should change. It would cost an initial fee. Also the vet hospital has more appointments. It's easy to get an appointment at short notice and they are very experienced and caring. Polo used to get very nervous in his carrier on the train, but he seems a lot calmer now and will eat his hay and even cuddle up and nap. The vet was quite taken with him 🙂 He is a brave little piggy ❤
