Hello.

I had four guinea pigs, separated in two cages because they don't all get along. Ginger and Panda were together and Rhona and Sasha were together. Over the last weekend, Rhona took an unexpected turn for the worse and there was nothing that could be done. It was probably something she had been holding onto for a long time- but her stomach had somehow entirely twisted, and it would have just been cruel to keep her alive.

This leaves me with three guinea pigs. I tried to bond Sasha to Ginger and Panda, but Ginger and Panda are far too dominant to accept another guinea pig and it didn't end very well. Sasha is 1 year old and the other two are 2 years old.

I don't want Sasha to be alone, but I don't know if getting another guinea pig would help her in her bereavement since the last introduction didn't go so well. I know guinea pigs can't be alone, and I want to pair her again, I just don't know what kind of guinea pig to go for or what would be the best match. Sasha is a little rascal and loves getting into places where she isn't meant to be, and she was the submissive partner when Rhona was still alive.

Please, does anyone have any advice for my next steps forward?
Thank you.

I’m so very sorry for your loss.

If your girl doesn’t get along with the others, you could always try dates at a rescue until she chooses a companion?
Alternatively, the next best thing is for her to live next to them and interact through the bars. One of my boars lives alone, surrounded by others who he talks to through the bars; as after his companion died he had several failed bonding attempts and is very easily bullied by others. He’s quite happy now with his neighbours

The only rescue close to where I live is in Ayr, and I'm from Glasgow. I want to ensure she's happy - she's been doing a lot of sleeping lately, probably because of grief. I did try putting them side by side and it seemed to be okay, but every time they met through the cage they really didn't like each other. Ginger and Panda are extremely dominant.

Even if they are dominant from the other side of the bars, it isn’t necessarily an issue. At least she has the company there.
Are you weighing her daily?
