rob and i went to PAH bromborough today and saw something we were not pleased about. A lady and her 2 young children were looking at a couple of adoption sows. the (less than great) PAH staff member opened the pen while asking her a couple of questions and gave the lady one of the pigs to hold. Heard the woman say do i have to pay for the pigs as its adoption! {:| i thought hmmmmm what a brilliant attitude.

Rob and i got the rest of our shopping and went to pay, the same lady was at the till infont of us, pigs now in 2 seperate cardboard carriers.

this is where it starts getting upsetting. the youngest child (i'm guessing max age 6 picked up a carrier, started shaking it and bashing it against the counter. i said something then the mother eventually stopped her. But the staff member said nothing and carried on getting the woman to sign the adoption forms.

we then watched the mum let the same kid carry the guinea pig (in carrier) out of the store, banging against the door frame and the kids leg on the way out. :(

I got served then we walked out of the shop, only to see them sauntering to the other shops on the park, but they didn't have the carriers anymore.... strange?

Rob and i went to tescos to buy a DVD, came back couldn't buy anything as it was niggling me too much, WHAT had she done with the pigs? Rob saw the car she went to it was parked right infront of the store, so i had a nose in and the pigs were nowhere to be seen.... she'd put them in the boot and gone shopping (its rainy but still pretty hot here today).

So i went back into pets hat home, explained everything i'd seen, the (excellent member of staff at the till) got the manager, i managed to keep my cool even though i was fuming, explained everything again, stating that it was the shops responsibilty where all pets go, and that the lady had only had them 5 mins and was already neglecting them. the manager said he would keep an eye out for her, and when she returned to the car he would take back the pigs.

Now i'm a cynical person when it comes to things like this, so i went back to my car, parked facing her car. we waited another 40 mins before she eventually came back. when i saw her i darted into the store, the (excellent) staffmember was already on the phone to the manager. But I was not letting those guinea pigs go back with her. so i stood behind her car preventing her from reversing (it felt like i was standing there for ages and it was chucking it down). Luckily, it gave the staff enough time to escort her and the pigs back into the shop.

the manager didn't involve himself, he sent out the (less than great) staff member who gave her the pigs in the first place.

I'm so glad we were around, god only know how she would have looked after those pigs. i was so nervous standing behind the car in case it kicked off, but there was no way i was letting her go off with those pigs. I'm still feeling the adrenelin now! rolleyes I'm sure i did the right thing.

Well done Jane and Rob! That's fantastic, you did the right thing! They should check these things out! You've probably just saved 2 pigs from a lifetime of neglect!

It is hard when you see a pig or indeed any animal needing a home, you want to look after all of them, sadly thats not possible. We all do what we can. I know i want to go back and take those pigs, but at the moment i really don't want to increase our numbers. So i have to hope that PAH treat this as a lucky escape and take more care where they go to. Its always tinged with a little guilt when you see a rescue and you can't take them in.

yep that is so true also couldnt really take him as have a pregnant sow who is due in a few weeks time so will need space for them if she has any boars oh well just hope all the adoption piggies at pah find good loving forever homes.

Well done you, I'm very impressed. Pity there aren't a few more people like you.

Perhaps we should put you in for a cloning project and then we could put one outside each Pets @ Home :(|)

heehee one look at me and no one would go in, they'd be out of business in a week! Besides Rob can barely cope with the original.

I think what you did was wonderful, and brave too for standing behind the car. Well done, I'm sure we are all very proud of you. You saved those little piggies from who-knows-what.

Jane I would email Pets at Home's head office and explain what happened and how they should have some policies in store. It's a long shot but worth a try. :)

The adoption pets at our local are Blue Cross, perhaps contact them directly since they are entrusting the store to rehome responsibly rather than give them to the first person who shows any interest.

Well done, you deserve a medal x)
Glad you were there, it was a brave thing you did...I hope you feel good about yourselves, you saved those poor piggies from that awful family :o

OMG I was in this store this morning and saw these two pigs, called Rosie and Daisy they are soo cute we were very tempted but with 15 already we are a bit stretched. Congrats Jane you saved them from those horrid people, poor little pigs looked scared enough this morning without being shook. I only hope they go to a good home if they havent already

well done hun for being so brave and saving those poor piggies, hope they find a loving hoe soon x

WELL DONE!

God knows what would have happened with those poor little piggies, what kind of person would let their child do that, and THEN just dump them in the boot of the car!

disgraceful.

You did a very good job there!

well done for being so active in helping those poor guinea pigs, sadly its all too rare that people will intervene in something.
i really hope those poor piggies get a good home soon, the staff deserve a kick up the bottom i personally think. i would possibly complain to the head of the shop, but then i suppose we all know how much they will take notice of that :(

Well done!
Need more people like you!
P@H should get their national policies sorted out
it shouldn't be up to other customers to sort their staff out!
Well done again!

Well done, If I was in there with my mum she wouldn't let me do anything like that.

There should be more people who can stand up to people and do something! So well done!

Oh my god, how terrible of the store!
I'd have stopped them sooner if i was the staff. Trouble is if they didn't want to adopt would she just have bought 2 instead? I guess they can say no to that too though.

Very well done, you should feel very proud of yourself.

(Anyone know the code for a thumbs up smiley?)

You did the right thing them poor pigs, I don't know whether I would have had the bottle to. Atleast she never ran you over.

Well done! Good on you for going to so much effort to prevent those piggies from going to a bad home. P@H have you sign a form to confirm that you are going straight home with whatever animal you have bought. Obviously that wasn't spelt out firmly enough to that family. I also can't believe that they think it is acceptable to go shaking the box and banging it - god knows what would have happened to the poor wee things if that's how they were treating them from the beginning.

Hi guys just a little update, robs just got off the phone to the store, and they'd taken them off the woman, and put them in the back of the store to get over the upheaval, they'll be back out on the shop floor tommorrow.
