Hi everyone, I currently use wood shavings for my 2 boys and I get the £10 bale from pets at home but some vets near me have said not to use it as it’s very dusty and not good for them. Where is the best and cheapest place to get really good woodshavings from? I live in Manchester. Also my piggies have been using the pets at home bale for a year now and I don’t think I’ve had any problems but just want to be on the safe side. What’s everyone’s experiences with shavings? Are they healthy for piggies? Good quality? I just want to know what you all think of them. Thank you :)

Aubiose hemp bedding is probably your best bet, you can get it at local horse feed stores. I use Bedmax dust extracted large shavings or chopped straw, both have which have no dust and bed very well.

I used wood shavings with all my pigs for about 20 years before I converted and brought them inside on fleece and I never had a problem. Sawdust is a no no as the particles are way too small. I’m sure some people would steer clear of wood shavings, but at the end of the day if they work for you and you are happy with the quality of the shavings you use and your pigs are happy and healthy, then I’m sure you’ll be fine 🙂 once upon a time wood shavings were all anyone used after all.

I really like the thoroughbred brand of shavings, on Amazon. They only seem to come in 20kg bales though so if you're looking for smaller amounts, Home Bargains does snowflake woodshavings which are also a really nice quality brand.

I’ve used PAH wood shavings for a few years without any problems.
Some batches can be a bit dusty, or not smell as nice, but on the whole I’m happy with them.

Going to have a look at the Thoroughbred brand on Amazon though as it’s recommended by @Eriathwen

i use aubiose in the main,it is very absorbent,it looks nice ! it is dust free.woodshavings are good if you like them, snowflake supreme shavings are dust extracted, kiln dried, very soft ,and absorbent, good luck i hope you find a bedding which you really like.

I’d also highly recommend aubiose. I did buy shavings from PAH once but wasn’t happy with the quality - big chunks and some other things in there.

I also highly big up abiouse, I would never go back to woodshavings, even my house doesn't get a smuch dust everywhere anymore since switching. I use it for gerbils mixed with hay for better burrowing

I'm considering trying the abiouse, we currently use a dust extracted wood shavings from our local pet store (who are very helpful and knowledgeable ) which we have no problems with, other than I seem to be constantly buying it! As someone else mentioned it stays wet on top so we seem to remove quite a lot every couple of days and to up with a full change once a week, so am wondering if the abiouse would be better.
