So unfortunately my girls problems still aren't sorted. Pringles still has her ovarian cyst and since Pebbles has been off the cerenia antibiotic she has bled twice.

Obviously I made an appointment to get them seen by the vet again, they are going at 10:20am on Monday morning. I am definitely going to request the hormone injections for Pringles, but last time Molly said that if the cerenia didn't work, Pebbles would have to be opened up to find out what's causing the bleeding (so most likely she will be spayed). These pair are sisters, and are now 3 years and 7 months old. I understand how dangerous spaying is which is why I'm worried sick.

Pebbles is absolutely fine in herself, but obviously she can't bleed forever, and one day, whatever is causing the bleeding will get worse and make her really poorly/possibly kill her.

We will find out what is happening for definite on Monday, and when I do I will be sure to update you all. I can't get it off my mind though, when the day comes it's going to be horrible until I get the phonecall to hopefully say she is ok. :(

Bless you, I don't know what to say to help you really but just take a moment to know your doing your best and have your furries best in your heart.

I have 4 spayed sows - 2 were from Rugby rabbit and guinea pig rescue (when they were still operating as a rescue) , and my two oldest pigs Truffles & Noodles who are 4 3/4 were both spayed late last year.Despite the horror stories I had heard they both came through with flying colours - as long as you see a cavvy savvy vet who has spayed sows before you should be fine - your girly who has the bleed sounds like my Noodles - intermittent bleeding but no obvious signs of ovarian cysts (no bulging sides or hair loss on the sides -) but turns out there was a tumour in her womb and 2 ovarian cysts - so everything was whipped out no problem.Noodles had had a fatty lump removed by another vet and came out of the op a very sorry looking little pig and was miserable during her recovery. The spay however ,even though much more invasive, because it was carried out by a specialist ,she was ,and I kid you not ,bouncing around the same day, awake and eating 25 mins after I left her at the vets to be operated on - (the vet has 7 of her own piggies and spays all her females - (she also breeds once every year or so to keep a blood line going so she told me) and has 27 pets of her own including 2 skunks - I found it helpful to pay an extra £19 and have them kept in overnight at the vets with their cagemate so the nurses could do all the syringe feeding and keep a check on her - much less stressful for me and for piggy - so while it is terrifying and there is always a small risk,I personally think your piggies would be better off being spayed -especially as there are 4 of them in my lounge. xx

Hi there sorry to hear the girls are still not feeling too good :(

i had a bit of a dilemma a while back with my Ellie, basically she kept bleeding & getting UTI's, she was about 6+yrs old at the time & the vet did a conscious ultrasound & found a mass that she believed was an ovarian cyst & said spaying was the only option, but she wouldn't do it as Ellie was too old! i researched mostly on here & talked my vet into trying the HCG injections. she had 2 jabs approx 7-10 days apart in March & touch wood no bleeding since

this could be an alternative to spaying for you? Although 3yrs is not what i would consider as being too risky with the right vet doing the operation. An experienced cavy savvy spaying vet shouldn't have much of a problem. although all surgery carries an element of risk :(
Then again i dont know how long the HCG injections last & so it may be worth considering a permanent solution by spaying first as last, as opposed to a temporary one?
Also it would delay the spay if you decide on it in the future if the hCG jabs don't work, creating more of an age related risk to spaying :(

Think i would discuss the options with your vet. & decide how confident & piggy savvy they are, as to whether you trust them with a spay or not? (are they on the recommended vet locator at the top of the forum?)

here is Ellie's thread from march, if its any help?

Also here are two members which may be able to give some more advice ref ovarian cysts @biscandmatt @helen105281

healing vibes & a speedy recoveries to them both - Good luck with your decision & let us know how you get on Monday.

from the girls & I. xx

Thank you all! And thank you to the last 2 comments which were very helpful and explanatory. It is a relief to know that your sows were fine and recovered well, @TAN. It puts me at ease knowing this. I hope Pebbles doesn't have any tumours, she is a little love though, she isn't showing signs of being poorly or in pain, it's just this bleeding which we can't get to the end of.
Tracy in Rugby spayed 2 of my girls when I unfortunately had to rehome them, thankfully they were fine although much younger. Keeping the girls at the vet is something to think about for the extra small fee, although I do think she would be better to recover at home where it's less stressful with similar surroundings. Pringles is the more nervous one of the two, she is the pig with the cyst, I don't think I could cope with having 2 spayed at once so I think I will opt for the hormone treatments to begin with.

@GPTV - thank you! I believe I was following Ellie's thread quite often, I am glad you have found a solution in the end. Seeing as Pebbles has had an ultrasound and 2 x-rays and no obvious signs of cysts, I think my vet would be inclined to give the HCG injections, as I believe she isnt keen on the option anyway although I could be wrong. Thank you for tagging the other members for me aswell :)

I'm sure many are aware that our vet is Molly at Cheshirepet, who is one of the leading exotic vets in the country... I won't allow anyone else to see my piggies and rabbits now unless it's an emergency. I will ask her how many sows she has spayed! I am aware that my girls will be in the best hands but it doesn't stop me from worrying. I've had them since they were tiny babies and they are all a big part of my life, as all my pets are.

Ahh is that Molly varga? i have read many positive posts on here about her :tu:

i'm glad you have an exotics specialist, my vets practice is large & its a bit pot luck if you get a cavy savvy one, so now i always ask for the one i trust the most & find out when she's available if possible, if not two of the others are ok as standby, (although the vets have always been great for all my other furred, finned & feathered friends!)

Good luck xx

Yes it is Molly Varga :) I am lucky to hahe the vets she works in within a reasonable distance. Thank you again :)

Glad it is Molly you are seeing. In which case I can't really add much other than that I have had good experiences with the HCG injections too. Good luck for Monday.

Awww, that's so stressful, I feel for you and hope all goes well for your girls at the appointment. They certainly do know how to stress us out!

I am absolutely fed up at the moment. :(. My other guinea pig Porche had issues where she was squeaking when weeing a few months ago. I've not noticed any squeaking for a while now and thought she was better (she did receive vet treatment) .. but around 5 minutes ago I heard her squeaking quite loud, so I picked her up and felt her stomach and she started squeaking then aswell. More towards the right hand side. I can't cope with this. :(

Huge hugs, you have a hugely respected vet. The downside of the love we have of our piggies is this worry and waiting and the unknown is so difficult to deal with. I have no practical advice but are keeping you and your piggies in my thoughts

Thank you. Going to have to call on Monday morning and change the appointment for 3 guinea pigs rather than 2. I just want them to be sorted once and for all. I have no clue what is wrong with Porche :(

Mine all did that to me last year - 2 spays, an ultrasound and an x-ray and - a boar with kidney stones and a boar with a course of treatments from an animal chiropractitioner at £45 for 15 min treatments - cost £2000 last year - ended up taking all 7 pigs in in 3 carriers. - finding the kidney stone was the hardest!

Bless you @LeahsPiggies. What a worry for you with all 3 giving you cause for concern. I hope on Monday you and Molly work out the best way forwards for your girls x

maisie had a very stubborn cystitis and ovarian cysts. she had the hcg injections and they worked really well. she cleared her cystitis finally and her weight came back up and touch wood, she has been fine since.

molly varga is meant to be excellent so you're in great hands. :) x

Thank you all again! Porche seems very sensitive in certain areas of her abdomen, it seems to have came again quite suddenly. It's as if she knew that I didn't make the initial appointment for her, so she decided to show her symptoms again to let me know!

Porche first started squeaking back in January sometime and had several causes of antibiotics so help clear it. As I said I hadn't heard her squeak for a couple of months so I thought she was better. She hasn't been on septrin yet but I'm worried that an infection has spread. :(

Fingers crossed!

oh dear, sounds like you're having a bad run of it :soz:
Molly should be able to sort everyone out by the sounds of things :D
good luck with all of them at the vets & all fingers &paws crossed here for you
oh & a lil ol' hug for you too... sounds like you need it. xx

Thank you. I'm just thankful that none of them seem to be in pain (apart from Porche unfortunately). Just glad that we are in tomorrow morning. I am hoping they will allow me to bring Porche aswell, I will be ringing beforehand anyway.

Will update you again when we get home tomorrow! I appreciate all of your vibes. :)

Ok we're back. Molly was happy to do the hormone injections for Pringles - So she has had her first one and is due for 2 more 10 - 14 days apart. It looked so painful but she was so brave and never made a sound, bless her.

As I was expecting, spaying Pebbles was now my only option. Molly said it's common for older females to bleed from the veins in the uterus? I think that's what she said. She said she would be happy to spay her today although she didn't want me to rush into anything so said I was welcome to book another appointment, however, I did just want it over with so I signed the consent form and she is at the vet as we speak having the procedure done. Pringles is with her luckily - I am so so worried, just waiting for the phonecall now (obviously later on)

So that brings me to Porche, seeing as no blood is in the urine and there were no stones found on the x-ray we did, and the fact that she has been on antibiotics with no change, she said it would be difficult to treat. I told her that she hadn't been on septrin yet, but she never even mentioned that and went straight to the cerenia. If I'm right in thinking she may need this long term if it works? I'm not sure, I was a bit hepped up over Pebbles so some of it has gone through 1 ear and out the other. We are going to see how she does on it anyway and then go from there again.

I will update you when Molly phones back later!

I've never heard of older sows bleeding myself but others may have done.

You are going through such a hard time with your piggies right now and I am keeping everything crossed for them all.

I hope that Pebbles's surgery goes well and she makes a full recovery. I know what an anxious wait you have xx

I wish pebbles luck. I really feel for you. You are going through so much right now and it is so hard.

Thank you both, I don't know why that posted twice! I won't be able to settle until I get the phonecall and when she is home. Just off to sort her cage now and make it comfortable for her. It's going to be an expensive doo but they're all worth it! There was a trainee student in the room with us and he was telling me that his female piggies had cysts too. It's a shame how common they're becoming.
