One more suggestion - have you started a new bag/box of hay recently? Hay can be first, second or third mowing and has different sugar content and texture (leafy vs stalky) as a result.

bought new hay two weeks ago, but it looked like it was from the same pile from last time
i go to a produce store and they store lots and lots of bails........

thanks for that suggestion..... god i hope it's not that as hay is so good for their toofies

hi glynis, just got caught up on the thread, and I'm sorry to here she's unwell. no experience with diabetes, but i wanted to wish you both good luck! keep us updated. xx

You could try them on a different hay and see if that makes a difference.

I didn't know about that but I guess it doesn't always look the same. I like the long thin grassy stuff cos it smells so lush... (not to eat myself sthough!).

Ive been doing some reserach on this ...and the pple that sem to know about frist/second cuts and carbohydrate content are the horse fraternity.

Carbohydrate content is different in different cuts...and to make things more complicated...also in the different types of grasses (eg Timothy, orchard, meadow etc) :{

It depends upon whether the grass is an early flowering one or a late flowering one (early-headed or late-headed) as first cuts in early flowering have similar content to second cuts in late flowering.

You also need to be aware that both non-structural carbohydrate and, (more relevant I think for Velvet,) water soluble (easily digestible) carbohydrate levels referred to.

As to which is best for Velvet...I'm afraid I am none the wiser atm (but if I learn more I'll come back to you!)

Tyr googling a few horse forums as they are exrtremely particular about their hay.as carbohydrate content has been linked to laminitis. You may be able to source a suitable type from a local stables...also perhaps some of the horsey members on here can help shed light on this ?

Thanks that's brilliant info xx>>>xx>>> will follow up and enquire!
I asked the guys at the produce store and they said first cut meadow hay from Rochester which is up near the border of Victoria and New South Wales ....... i'll also put in an enquiry to their council (or someone) and ask what grasses they have in the area!

I also feed them a handful of western timothy hay each day........ i can buy it in bags at my vets (oxbow) brand.

thanks again you're a whizz xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

Bloods update

She was a very good girl at the vets, only had a little oops moment ") she wee'd on mummy LOL

They did the tests on the blood, her glucose level is 24.6 which compared to November last year when it was 29.4 approx. STILL WAY WAY too high.........but she has come down a teeny bit
Brendan said at this stage keep up with the diet of no sugary foods and try to get her to exercise a little more as this will also help her ? i asked if he had a treadmill for her :))
He also said her urine test was normal this time, no problems with kidneys etc.. and he had a quick peek in her mouth and said all molars etc.. looking good........i said well yeah she loves her hay so this should keep them ground down.

THANKS FOR ALL THE SUPPORT ............... i was very teary this morning and sat at the vets with my fingers crossed and telling myself she'd be ok the whole 7 mins she was gone.

i'm so glad to hear that it was better news than you thought at the vets. Can just imagine her on a mini treadmill :))

Ahh thats great news that the levels are all down/normal great great news :) Youre posts are so funny! Think my girls are on the weighty side, when you develop the piggly treadmill let me know, Ill put an order in! :)) x

aw Glynis! Glad to hear Velvet levels are down now. Good job she has such a fab slave!

Huge Hugs and the piggies send there Wheeks..... :))

Aw bless her! You poor thing, they are such a worry aren't they? What sort of dry food can she have?

she is eating a dry mix that's here in OZ........ i pick out some of the stuff tho.

her levels for the glucose even tho it's come down a little in the 8 mths it's still way way TOO HIGH :... the trouble is if it stays like this or spikes even more it will be affecting her organs and i would dearly love her to be around for many more years to come ! I do know the outcome isn't the brightest for her, the too high levels will eventually affect her kidneys :(
