Ollie’s 5 and he gets crackly breathing quite a lot, he seems to have very narrow airways and just gets a lot of hay dust stuck up there since he’s a huge burrower and must be half hamster. it’s very normal for him over the years so usually i don’t worry about it because after a sneeze or a couple hours it clears but it’s been on/off for the past day-ish with no sneezing. he has no weight loss (he’s 1.07kg) and he’s still eating and begging and popcorning like the greedy pig he is, his cagemate has no unusual breathing noises at all. the noise 100% sounds like it’s just from his nostrils but i still worry especially because he’s an older boy. i gave my vet a ring this morning and they’re all booked up but i sent them a video to see if they’d give me antibiotics for him. if they don’t and aren’t able to see him until next week, would anyone think this warrants a trip to a different vet today?

unfortunately my closest exotics vet is an hour and a half away but my cat’s vet is fantastic at dealing with pigs and if she’s ever unsure she gets in touch with the exotics vet they refer to who help out and give treatment plans/opinions/recommendations. i can’t say i really trust any other vet in my area much but like i said my own is closed at 2 today and the receptionist said they’re swamped

Sorry to hear your boy is a bit croaky.

Is it worth trying to call your vets every day to see if they have had any cancellations?

I had a piggie who made a similar noise and like you a cough or a sneeze would clear it. Sometimes I found that giving her nose a lkte massage for 30 seconds, stopping for a few minutes then another little massage would sometimes help her sneeze and clear it (i would touch her nostrils just the top part of her snout). I think if it hasnt cleared by Monday via a sneeze etc then i would try again to get an appointment.

Good luck and I hope it clears x

It’s so tricky isn’t it but you know your pig and if I learnt anything with Squirrel sometimes the vets don’t know best. If you think he’s ill you keep insisting - I fought hard for Squirrel but not hard enough and I learnt to be even more of a pain in the backside. You could ask for Baytril and wait before you start it - I’ve bargained that one before. Good luck keep us posted

Thank you both, I wasn’t confident leaving him without being seen at all so I got him into a vet I don’t exactly like or trust yesterday just so I could get him some Baytril to be on the side of caution. I’ll check back in my own vet next week, hopefully Baytril does the trick x
