Facial abscess - my lovely Rodney ;(

Oh dear, I'm worried I may wake up tomorrow & find Rodney's is back too... But I had been worried it was a tumour like his brother had so I feel like hopefully this can be fixed. Hopefully. Don't want to get too ahead of myself. What has Fred been given to take?

Glad you have a good piggy vet, they are not easy to come by! 128 mile round trip for me ;/

He's on Baytril at present and Daktarin gel for his mouth, we think the lump which now maybe an abscess is under his front incisor at least that's what the mouth Xray's showed, I'm cleaning his mouth daily and he's also got a very fancy mouth spray which is just loxicom but in spray form he had this for his throat infection last month. We're waiting on the pathologist he'll be able to tell what antibiotic we use as the sample was taken before he began the Baytril.

I feel quite lucky now, our vet is a 57 mile round trip but he's most certainly worth it!

Rodney hasn't had an X-ray yet, but I think next week he may do. They wanted to get his results back & to give him a few days on new medication, his mouth kept filling with pus once they started!

Fred had a throat infection? Oh dear he is going through the wars! Such a worry isn't it! I'm delighted this morning as woke up & put light on - he was out munching. He's been quiet past 2 days & doesn't look as tho its come back altho I'm letting him have breakfast before I give him medicines. Am thankful he doesn't need syringe feeding etc, I had all that 6 months ago with his brother It was awful.

We think Rodney may have a back tooth root issue, and usually they apparently do need the tooth out so will see how he goes... He seems to be able to eat hay etc fine don't understand how he could if he had a back tooth issue..

I have dealt with many tooth root abscesses and with the use of zithromax we have never had to remove a tooth. To ascertain exactly which tooth the abscess is under you are going to need a CT scan rather than an xray. Is your piggie on antibiotic now or are you waiting for the results to decide which antibiotic to use?

Hi Pamelakt,

I am so pleased he has been seen by somebody decent. Just wondering, how far did you have to travel to see the vet.

S x

They are going to order the zithro for me as they didn't have it in stock, but want to see what his results say first. He is currently on something called.... Norvic or something along those lines I will have a look when i am home. Starts with an N. He is also on Metacam for the inflamation and I have bought him some fibreplex to keep his tummy happy.

I will speak to hr again about the zithro as I would rather he didn't need a tooth out. He has a slightly crusty nose do you think his tooth root is too long?

Silly - it was a 128 mile round trip. 64 miles each way. 1 hour 20 minute drive each way.

Lots of love to Rodney, hope you can get it sorted quickly for him and lots of healing vibes and wheeks from the girls. x

Still need to get these meds right tho I'm not getting too far ahead of myself. Contacted the vet today to make sure the Zithromax is ordered. Taking him back Tuesday so hoping everything I need will be in by then.... how is Fred? X

Fred is doing very well, just keeping up with the meds. He's very strong! x

He is doing fine and is being th eperfect patient - but it is slowly coming back so am desperate for these tests to come back & to get the zithromax.... I have another appointment tuesday. He's good tho and is eating fine & active xx

So happy to hear that Rodney is doing well. I hope you can get rid of the thing without too much trouble. I had a tooth root abscess at new year, so I can empathise with him. :) Love Billy's chookie leg too! :))

Very happy to hear Rodney is doing well, not so good that the lump is returning but I'm sure you and Jenny will find the right solution! Let us know how your appointment goes on Tuesday. :)

When it was drained was the wound left open so you can flush it? They heal very quickly but I just pull the scab off each day and keep it open. The pus will continue to build up, but if the wound is open you can squeeze it out. Even when he is on antibiotics you will need to keep draining it. An abscess heals from the inside out, so the pus will get less and less at it heals.

No it wasn't, if I push on it the pus goes into his mouth as it leaks out from the inside. I am taking him back tuesday and am hoping to leave with the new drugs altho it will need to be popped again now.

This zithromax, this should hopefully stop him needing a tooth out you said? How long do you have them on this for? Just so I know what to look out for. If he has a tooth root abscess which is causing this, the zithromax should get rid of it without him needing to lose a tooth?

I have spoken to the vet & the test results are still not back yet - altho are expected today.

I have an appointment tomorrow afternoon, and if the results show he should hav ebeen responding to the anti biotic he is currently on then they want to admit him to remove the offending back tooth (altho he has had no xray/CT scan to show this).

I don't want my little man to be admitted overnight or to have his tooth out!

If he needs this, has anyone else experienced this? How will he manage with a tooth missing?? Will it grow back again?!

I wish this thing would BEEP off!!

Unless it is completely obvious from looking in the mouth, I can't see how they can ascertain exactly which tooth it is without CT scan. So are they not intending to try zithromax? Which antibiotic is he on at mo? Other antibiotics might do something, but having dealt with so many abscesses, there is no doubt that zithromax is the one for the job.

Sorry I have private messaged you - but just noticed this.

They have zithromax in stock, but she keeps saying she is keen to see what his test results say first. If they come back and he should have been responding then they want to admit him to investigate it further & likely remove a tooth. But like you say there has no talk of a scan.

He is on something called Norzol at the moment.

When I am there in person tomorrow I intend to really insist on the zithromax and she I think is happy for me to have it - but still wants to see what his tests come back with.

Hey you,

Just wanted to wish you good luck at the vet's today, I hope his test result's are back and you can move forward with his treatment!

x

I do hope the test results give something tangible. It must be very frustrating not knowing what the problem is, let alone how to successfully treat it.

Hi guys, thank you for the well wishes! I haven't been able to get on here between work, leaving work early to race to a vets 64 miles away mallethead and mopping up after an exploding Pig face!

I got home yesterday lunchtime & Rodney's abscess had popped, took him to the vet as planned & they wanted to lance & drain the abscess fully as he was starting to get very upset with all the prodding. De to the distance, I had to leave him overnight which wasn't very nice. Luckily I had taken some veg & food just in case so he had some home comforts.
He was very well looked after I think he's actually enjoyed himself @) I have collected him this afternoon only been back an hour. He had a sniff of gas, no injectable GA.

He is great, and much happier eating like a horse - but he has a hole where obv the abscess has been & we are waiting to find out what to do next. His result came back as no bacteria resent, only a yeast infection. So at the minute I'm not to give him an anti biotic until we find out from some specialist place how to treat him.

This makes me very nervous as am paranoid it will close up & get hay stuck in it or something!

2 minutes after getting home - starvin marvin!

Thank you ;) I am so relieved to have him home tonight, was lost without him last night! He is very happy to be home & is absolutely full of beans! The vet said he was an absolute delight, he ate all the greens & food I left him with overnight & apparently as soon as he opened his eyes he was eating right away. Little porker ;)

Feeling much better after speaking to Debbie on the phone, I have a plan, I just need the vet to agree to it!

Honestly, the difference in personality after the abscess is drained is phenomenal. It's really shown me how down he must have been. He is right back to his cheeky self, and is visibly chuffed to be home.

God I love him!
