Guinea pig bladder issues and penis issue

Follow your instinct as long as he's not in pain to me there is no harm in waiting but I'm no expert of course šŸ’
Hi there - his water intake is pretty much where it usually is. Not much more and eating really well. Surely if he was in kidney failure I’d see no reduction in water uptake.
I’m keeping very detailed records.

I agree with CTWC, as long as he is eating and drinking and acting normally I would let him be. He is on meds that will help him with any pain or infection, time will tell if something is seriously wrong.
Be careful with internet research it can be very misleading. Try not to stress yourself too much with this your own health is important as well. We are all here for you and Stan.
I will be careful - most of what I found just backs up forum information which I do trust. Thank you for the support - it’s much appreciated.

Sorry you’re having such a torrid time. I hope the pain meds help. You’re very caring and thorough. I know how utterly consuming this can be mentally, practically and emotionally, so make sure you look after yourself in all this too!

Thank you Lucy. Stan is doing really well which is what makes me think that perhaps they don't have it right. From what I can gather if he was in kidney failure he would be drinking the same volume as the night before his vet visit which he just isn't. He was literally at the water bottle every five minutes through that night and now he is drinking as you would expect (after eating hay, pellets etc) like a normal piggy. Antibiotics and pain relief would make no difference to water volume unless perhaps it was a kidney infection. He is eating like a horse and bright, alert and his fur is not spiked. I am leaning toward a bladder infection - maybe even caused by a bacteria build up due to the antibiotics he was on for quite a long time after his op or sterile cystitis. I am no vet this is only my thoughts and only time will tell but I'm certainly more hopeful than I was. Stan and I have fought so hard together, loosing Squirrel and then him having the bladder stone op so we will keep exploring all possibilities. Thanks for the kind words

It sounds like Stan is doing really well. Keep doing what you’re doing. You’ve been amazing.

If he has kidney failure then nothing you do will help. But it seems like he’s perked up with the medication. I’m still rooting for a UTI. Sending healing vibes and hugs as usual ā¤ļø

Exactly Weeps ! Time will tell. It doesn’t add up to me !

This is a photo of the wees he did between the tray change and 2,00 pm when they swapped into the indoor run - pretty normal I would say and here he is right now!

He is very handsome šŸ’™
Thank you he knows it as well ! He's still doing very well. I will be emailing the vet on Monday to give them some evidence and progress report and ask if they think 7 days of Baytril is enough for him and how long to continue with the metacam. They have had a piggy pedi this afternoon and Waffles has had a bit of a hair cut - not much just enough so he isn't tripping over himself!

Arh bless you Weeps. I hope master Pebbles is still doing well and of course Patrick. When I hear him drinking at night I have a bit of a panic and then remind myself that he does usually drink and to not be an idiot and in the morning when I measure how much has gone it’s a normal amount. Waffles doesn’t drink much at all but Stan has always been a good drinker - he is also very noisy at the bottle unlike waffles who is dainty with everything!

Hope you’ve had a great day my friend and some sunshine šŸŒž

Lovely sunshine.

It’s hard not to overthink when they are poorly. You are doing amazing.

I haven’t done too much today. Walked the dog, got the newspaper, read the newspaper and cooked a nice casserole for tea.

Sounds like a lovely day to me. We did another few hours of jet washing the patios after a walk in the sun. I worked on a document I’m preparing for our MP in advance of a meeting on the 20th regarding the flooding and did a bit of my course work. I’ve completed drawing and watercolours now on to portraits and figures !

Hello Weeps

We are doing ok thank you. I rang the vets this morning to talk about extending the Baytril for longer than 7 days and they are going to come back to me. Interestingly I gave Stan some cystease last night and the volume of water drunk over night was quite a bit reduced to what I have been recording. I haven’t changed his bed to see what the urine is like yet as he had got in it and was fast asleep. He’s eating well and maintaining weight but I do sometimes see having a poo is uncomfortable especially close to medicine time. Thanks for checking in I appreciate it so much and hope you and your boys etc are all well xx

That’s all positive. Hope everything is settling down.

All good here. 🤫 don’t want to jinx it 🤫

Absolutely we don't want to jinx it - we are keeping VERY quiet - well actually Stan is already asking for their tea which isn't until 5.30 but he thinks any time from 4.00 is acceptable to protest he is starving....

We have the same here. My husband said today ā€œevery time I go into the piggy room they are beggingā€ šŸ˜‚

Morning all - it’s Thursday and thought I’d give you an update. Blue tray is generally Waffles and pink Stan for their wee places. Stan is still on Metacam and baytril (I started him with those on Tuesday evening a week ago so he’s well over a week now. The vet agreed to my request for another week so I am going to continue for a few more days to be on the safe side. He’s not needed any tramadol. He’s having probiotic via syringe and a dissolved capsule of cystease in water spread over the day (he has piggy parcels uTI pellets which have glucosamine so I’m trying to not over dose him. I will keep an eye on his wee and once I see that settle I’ll revert just to the pellets. His weight is good and water intake is good. He’s eating well and happy piggy. I don’t know how long to keep giving him the Metacam for if anyone has any comment that would be great. The stone was a big one as you know and I think where it was taken off the lining it needs to heal properly. On another note waffles is doing lovely quality wees so I think the diet for them both for lower calcium is working nicely.

Hope everyone’s piggies are well and I hope my posts are giving other info that perhaps might help you on the same journey.

Amanda from piggy parcels has said on other posts that you must not give both Cystease and the pellets at the same time due to the high dosage of glucosamine in the pellets

Glad Stan is doing well in himself. I’ve no experience with the bladder problems. Sorry. Can you lower his dose of pain killers for a few days and then stop them to see how he reacts.

Morning

absolutely and this is why I’ve been cautious. In the guide in the forum it also says you need to work out how much to Cystease to give during an attack to get your pig well, if it’s sterile cystitis which we don’t know if it is obviously l, it says you can give two capsules a day initially so my thought was if he’s eating half his dose of piggy parcels one capsule spread over the day would help him during this crisis and not over dose him - he’s probably getting half a capsule and I think it is helping.

I don’t intend to do it long term. My vet wouldn’t even comment regardless as it’s not for pigs. It is purely what I’ve read on here. From reading on here it is common after a stone removal to have damaged bladder wall which is why I’m where I am.

My other dilemma is continuing with the antibiotics …. It’s it sterile then I’m just pounding Stan unnecessarily but if it’s bacteria then advice on here antibiotic and vitamin c, there is vitamin c in the probiotic I’m syringing in.

I wish vets would be as diligent with pig knowledge as they are with cats and dogs. The vet told me this time that tramadol better for kidneys than Metacam but we need the anti inflammatory part of the Metacam don’t we ?
