I have recently got my new pink eyed white sheltie cross Pablo, but we have just found out he has lice. He has long hair so I'm not surprised but theres a problem.

We had a dog which had fleas not so long ago, long story short after we had to rehome her because we couldn't be there for her during the day. My mum now has this weird phobia of insects and fleas and anything like that. She is always picking the tinest bits up off the ground that no one else in the house notices but us.

I have told my dad about this and when she was at work he came home early and took him to the vets, we managed to get him some medication to put behind his neck. But that hasn't done anything the lice are still in swarms around his bum.

My dad now refuses to buy any more medication and won't allow me to go out and buy more beacuse of my mum. If I tell her she will have a meltdown and freak out! And now the worst part is my other guinea pigs has it too!

What should I do!

Ps My parents are allowing me to bath my guinea pigs soon if that helps in any way. Also my mum is at work till Friday and I'm off with my dad and brother.

Could you put in your profile where you are based so people can advise you properly please? :)

The problem is... usually there's three treatments over a period of 6 weeks, my guineas get little friends from their hay as many people's guinea's do. The treatments I've had are over 6 weeks every 2 weeks. I think there's also an injection they can have but I'm not 100% sure about it @helen105281 might be able to advise on that.

The other guinea's will get it either from their hay or from the other guinea depending on what type of mites/lice they are. I've got 10 guinea's and all of them have recently had one's from their hay which they are still being treated for.

I'm sure someone will be along to post some advice. I only know my experiences with mites/lice.

If they are running lice or hay mites (Confirmed by the vet0 then 48 hours after the spot on treatment you can bath them, but how old are you? You might need an adult to help as a wriggly pig is a tricky pet o hold on to. I would bath them in the bath for extra safety. never use a sink. Ask your dad if he can order you some Lice n Easy from Gorgeous guineas or Flea or Die shampoo (I use that one) you need to bath them, clean out their cage thoroughly & through out anything that can't be hot washed in the machine or by hand (like plastic houses). After a week you need to repeat the bath, follow the instructions on the bottle. Great thanks! I've had a chat with him now and we've ordered some lice shampoo! Also I am 21 and I've just recently bought a flat so me and the pigs will be moving soon but I just wanted to get rid of them as soon as possible.

Oh you should be fine then lol :) What shampoo have you ordered? Only those two I quoted are safe for piggies & definitely work as far as I know :)

Hi!
Are the lice mobile, whiteish/yellowish (running lice) or are they just brown/darkish dots sitting on the fur at the bum end (fur/hay mites, also wrongly known as static lice)? The latter should respond fairly well to a round of medicated baths; they are the least harmful of the skin parasites that guinea pigs can have.

I am very sorry that your mum has developed a phobia. Skin parasites are species specific, so you can't catch them from your pets, and your guinea pigs can't catch any dog or cat parasites, for instance.

Please continue with the spot-on; just one application won't do the trick, but you need to be aware that cheap low-dosed pet shop products won't do the trick! Forbidding you to treat your guinea pigs won't make any skin parasites go away on their own unfortunately. :(

I would also recommend to contact gorgeous guineas re. lice'n'easy shampoo in view of your parents' limitations. Please be aware that you need to wait at least 48 between any topic (i.e. on the skin) treatment. Lice n Easy Shampoo 150ml
