I recently adopted another guinea pig yesterday and while checking him out for anything weird I came across many things. First off, he has weird black scabs in his ears and one of his ears are red and kinda swollen. Secondly, there’s this weird scab behind his ear with a little hair loss there as well. I got my guinea pig from a PetSmart( I know not that bright of a decision but he was too cute to pass up) I think it might be a fungal infection except it doesn’t seem as bad as the pictures I see if it as well as today I found a mother scab on top of his head, no hair loss there though. I’d really like some advice on what any of you think this is so I can get him the correct treatment.

Aw poor little man. It’s quite hard to know what these are But I would definitely get him vet checked. It could be anything from fungal to bites from another piggie

Oh dear :( I would have him checked out by a vet for the correct diagnosis and treatment and ask Petsmart to fund the vets bills. Make sure you keep all the receipts from the vet
I’m not to sure they’d pay the vet bills, but I’ve gone ahead and treated him with a safe anti fungal medicine for now to see if it gets any better if not I’ll be taking him to the vet soon. I’ve also made sure that the medicine is safe to use as well as won’t be dangerous if it isn’t fungus. Thanks for the advice though :D

Please have your piggy seen by a vet for a hands on diagnosis and prescribed treatment.
I hope he is ok

I’ve found a safe medicine to use incase it is fungal(it won’t harm him if it’s not) but I think it might be bites from other guinea pigs as he had two cage mates at the PetSmart and one was chasing him, which I though they were playing but you never know.

Hi and welcome

That ear looks sooo sore! Please have your piggy vet checked and do not home treat on spec; you can easily make things so much worse and increase any unnecessary suffering.

Please don't fail him a third time (firstly by his owners and then by being left without treatment at the shop) with your good intentions if you cannot follow them through. He really needs a proper diagnosis and vet strength treatment.

It’s always a good idea to get new piggies vet checked anyway. To pick up anything you can’t see. Please get him seen for the correct treatment and he will soon be on the road to recovery.

It may be safe and not harm him, but self treating without a diagnosis delays getting the correct treatment thereby potentially making the issue worse.
Also, using any kind of home treatment can hide any tell-tale signs a vet needs to make a diagnosis.

Please have him seen by a vet and don’t be tempted to use any low dosed pet shop products without a diagnosis.
