Hey all,

New to the Guinea pig world... I used to have Degus but sadly after my last one passed away 2 years ago, I have now acquainted myself with 2 beautiful guniea pig boars.

They are brothers, we got them when they were 3 & half months old from pets at home. They are are now 5 months old. Since we got them they made the odd few sneezes every odd day. We use wood shavings at the moment as we are trying to make our own fleece bedding for the c & c cage we made. They do tend to sneeze if the wood shavings are fresh & when fresh hay daily has been added.

Anyway, they make the odd sneeze noise & they do a noise that you only notice if you have them on you which we are not sure that it is their breathing or a really small squeak. They don't do this constantly. After about 5/10 mins of laying on either of us that sound goes & you can't hear them breathe. They have been like this since we got them from pets at home. Not sure is this is a general piggy noise. They are both eating well, social, no weight loss, both drinking, no crusty nose, discharge from any eyes or even any hair loss. Their poos are normal, they get excited around us & love pop corning. Both are gaining a healthy weight.

Since I am new to the guinea pig world I just wanted to know if I'm just being a worrier? Or, if it is something serious.

Any advice & feedback is appreciated :) Thank you.

Piggies do sneeze on occasion - to clear something or sometimes when they eat too fast. If it’s not a regular thing it’s ok.

What I’d say is take them to the vet for a general health check. It’s good if they’re still eating, pooping and behaving as normal.

Unfortunately the time has passed where you can reclaim any fees if your piggies are ill.

welcome to the forum, we’d love an intro to yourboys 🥰

As @Siikibam says, sneezing can happen with dusty hay or bedding, or greedy pigs hoovering up their dinner too fast- both my boars sneeze during meals! Guinea pugs have very narrow nasal passages that get blocked easily.

But a vet check is always a good idea to set your mind at rest, its a good idea for all new piggies get a health check with an experienced piggy vet, and then regular check ups with the vet or a vet nurse every 3 to 6 months, just to make sure they stay in good health :)

Thanks everyone for your replies :) we made the fleece lining etc & put that down on sat & we just came back from the vets. She said they are bother very healthy & no sign of anything wrong as when guinea pigs get ill they deteriorate very quickly. She listened to both their chests etc & found nothing wrong. She has given them metacam once a day for a week incase their nosel passage is inflamed. Over all a successful trip to the vets & I can say I am a worrier lol
