Possible stroke help

Huge hugs to you all, you've done fantastic work to get her this far.

I'm tagging @Wiebke for whether the cage mate should be left in. Often the squeals are a sign of submission so should pass but perhaps Wiebke can give her opinion on whether it's worth pursuing the bond further as she has far more experience in bonding than I.

Other than that take Ellie's advice. She's clearly still got some fight in her but what is she fighting for if she isn't living a normal piggy life. Fingers crossed you have some good news later

It sounds like Boris is a bit too much for her as she has not had time to adjust to any sensory loss and compensate with her other senses. That is always the worst phase (at least in my experience with piggies with sudden quick onset cataracts) when they are feeling especially vulnerable.
You'd have to see whether Boris desists with the mounting fairly quickly or whether he keeps on pushing the dominance to confirm his new status.

All the best for your vet visit.

Ask the vet to check for sight, hearing but also for loss of smell/taste, which can have a massive impact on the eating and forward movement as the front is not covered by sight.

Wiebke Thanks for the info.
We are sure her smell is ok as we can put things down and she will reach out to try to find it, she even followed a small pot of chopped up veg this morning but only because it contained cucumber.
As for Boris before Peanut had the babies she would always put him in his place and i can't remember him ever constantly trying mount her.
We spoke to somebody who runs a rescue centre and she was under the impression if we had him Neutered he would probaly stop being like that but i honestly don't know.
We are going to get him done hopefully next week, If Peanut Isnt able to be in the same cage as him we have talked about possibly getting a female from the rescue centre, as he really does need a friend to play with, we will of course wait 4 or 5 weeks. Can anyone with more guinea pig knowledge share their opinion. is that a good idea or do you think a new female could bully Peanut?[/QUOTE]

Firstly the rescue you spoke to isn't very knowledgeable as neutering does not impact on sex drive so it wouldn't change his behaviour towards peanut unfortunately. Also you need to wait 6 weeks post neuter before introducing any females otherwise you run the risk of pregnancy still

Yes i did think that info was wrong as i had read the info on here. You can rest assured We wouldn't introduce any new piggy to Boris until the 6 weeks had passed, i really could not deal with all this again. do you think it could be a possibilty Peanut would be bullied by a new female as that would be terrible thing to happen to her..

The mounting is a dominance issue between them. You have confirmed what I have suspected - Peanut is no longer able to hold onto the top spot, so Boris is taking over and going through the appropriate dominance.

You have two options - either sit out the power takeover and let that run its due course (it takes about 2 weeks on average) or keep them apart for good/re-bond him and keep Peanut as a next door neighbour.
If Peanut is going to re-bond with a new piggy, it would have to be with a gentle, non-aggressive soul (either sow or neutered boar) with a caring side to dominance and bonding stress to a minimum. Some piggies make wonderful carer companions - age and gender is not as important as personality. There is still going to be some degree of dominance, but it is going to be on the mild and shorter side. Ideally you date your piggies at the rescue so they can choose a new partner themselves if you think that the swing in leadership from Peanut to Boris is too stressful for her.

The screaming you are describing is submission screaming, which is the correct reaction to a dominance claim that cannot be contested.

Have a thorough read through this guide here to understand better how guinea pigs bond, both in view of behaviours, the different stages and dynamics: Bonding: Illustrated Dominance Behaviours And Dynamics

Thank you, we had planned on taking her to the rescue centre to let her choose a friend.. its all been a very bumpy journey for us and totally unplanned :(

Please don't put Boris and Peanut together again unless he's neutered and 6 weeks has passed. I would not want another accident for Peanut. To be honest,I do find boars do calm down once there older, my boys rarely hump. In the initial meet up it's always frantic and then calms down.

Peanut was spayed during emergency surgery - she has many things to worry about but another pregnancy isn’t one of them, thankfully :)

Yes I can confirm she won’t be getting pregnant as she was spayed. We went to see Ellie again last night for another check up. She was pleased with her recovery and she’s now off all meds. Peanut doesn’t have to go back now for two weeks.
Ellie did tell us last night She’s really surprised Peanut is still alive as she really didn’t think she would survive. She’s a very special little guinea pig.
I’m so pleased we found this forum, as without it we would have never found an excellent vet like Ellie who really does know about taking care of guinea pigs.

Last night after reading on here about re bonding and advice from Ellie, we put Peanut and Boris in a play pen together. I must admit it’s not very nice watching her get pushed about so much after all the love and care she’s received over the last few weeks, but if it’s going to help we will leave them to it. Ellie did say he won’t be able to hurt her as far as her surgery is concerned we just have to make sure there’s no biting or scratching. Thankfully there wasn’t.
Will put them together again later this evening for awhile.
It did seem to bring her out of her shell a little she even started wandering round eating some veg 😀

Of course, I completely forgot I did think it was strange given the circumstances that you would be risking another pregnancy. Definitely a Doh moment!

Hi everyone, I’m very sorry to have to say, we took peanut to the vets again today as she took a huge dip regarding her health and she appeared to have problems with pain to her tummy. I’m afraid it was advised to put her to sleep, which we eventually had to agree to. I’m very upset about it but it was for the best
Buried her with her babies.

You tried so hard! She's now back with her babies, playing over the Rainbow Bridge! Hugs x

I'm so sorry - you've done everything it was humanely possible to do to give peanut the best possible chance, since the day she came to live with you. Be gentle with yourself and cuddle Boris lots.

Popcorn free Peanut. xx

So sorry to hear that little Peanut has lost her fight - gone far too young :( And all because of the greed and heartlessness of the backyard breeders and the pet shop. RIP, popcorn free little one.
I hope Boris is okay, it must have been confusing and upsetting for him too.
 to you and your wife too at this sad time.

Such a sad day for you both. Thinking of you and Boris. Popcorn free little Peanut, you had so much love and care in your short life from your two wonderful piggy parents xx

For some reason my message got posted 4 times. I reckon Peanut is wanting her mum and dad to know how much she loved them xx

So sorry for your loss of peanut, you did absolutely everything possible to save her. Massive hugs to you and your family x

So sad to see this post, you tried so hard to save Peanut. Sending you big hugs.
RIP little lady. 🐾💔

Oh no - I have just caught up with your thread. You certainly could not have tried any harder for the lovely Peanut. Popcorn free beautiful girl.

Thank you for all the messages and support you have given over the last few weeks.
We didn't know Peanut very long but she touched our hearts and Monday was a very sad day for us. We had tried so hard to get her better and I'm afraid it just wasn't meant to be.
It was a hard decision to have to make but we didnt want to see her suffer any more.
Would like to say a special thank you to Pig in the city who tried to find Peanut a special friend to help with her recovery.
Peanut was introduced to Ester an adorable female Guinea pig on Sunday Morning so it all looked quite promising but I'm afraid Peanut was very poorly and took a turn for the worse during the day.

Boris is now booked in to be neutered a week on Monday and after his six week wait we will visit a few rescue places and try to find him a new friend, so he can hopefully be a happy little Guinea pig which is all we ever wanted. :)
