Hi everyone! I've had my pigs for about 6 months now and work in a pet shop so I'm always looking for good guinea pig pellet food. I know that anything with little colored chunks or flaked peas is bad for them so I avoid these mixes. I've tried all sorts, from Oxbow Organics (which they find just ok) to Selective brand. I don't like Selective as much because its very high in calcium but I mix it in with Oxbow essentials occasionally for fun. But is there any out there y'all think is better balanced or in general the best for piggies? Also I have trouble understanding the difference between Oxbow essentials and Oxbow Organics? And what age should I stop giving my 6 month girls alfalfa?

At 6 months now you can stop the alfalfa :) as for nuggets it all depends on your budget. The new science selective grain free is a nice balance with low calcium content and isn't as expensive as oxbow. Grainless pellets are better but not essential as they make up such a small amount of the diet. Also, a lot of grainless pellets are not quite as palatable to pigs as others.

i have tried a few non grainless pellets available in the uk,the cold pressed pellets are not liked by my piggies, but the selective science grainless pellets have been well recieved,i only give these to the piggies that have bladder problems,as i have 23 piggies and as yet the bags are only sold in 1.5 kg bags !

Which pellets are the ones which are cold pressed? My brain keeps wanting to add the word "oil" onto the end of that and is refusing to think any further.
How annoying that the SS pellets are only sold in small bags - have you contacted the company to ask about timescale? It could be that they don't know the market is out there for bigger bags?

cold pressed pellets are the grainfree woodlands pah ,rosewoods,jr farm and bunny.ive tried all these brands and they just leave them, ive tried going cold turkey but after a week they still would not eat these pellets! i may contact the company and see if there is a plan to sell larger quantities !

Ahha thanks, I hadn't realised they were all coldpressed. Mine like the Rosewoods and JR farm ones. Are the PAH Woodlands ones new? Might have to try them if they're cheaper, as they're presumably easier to get hold of too, and without additional postage costs.

yes the pets at home grainfree ones are new,be careful they do a nugget pellet which is not grainfree, but mine love these ! the ingredients are good, but do contain maize.the grainfree retail at £6.50 for 2 kgs,the cold pressed pellet is large so i snapped them in half !
