Hi everyone,

I really need help as we are in a sticky situation. I live in France and the whole country is under lockdown, we can only get out of the house to go to the supermarket, pharmacy and emergency doctor appointments.

Our young sow (7 weeks old) has come up with a white crusty patch under her nose. I called our trusty exotic vet on Saturday but sadly he told me he wouldn't be able to see her as the only visits allowed are for emergencies. He told me it could possibly be ringworm. I asked him if a photo could help him tell us what to do but he said that it wouldn't help, that he had to see her in person. So now we are left with a potentially sick piggy and no solution. Here is a photo taken just a few minutes ago. I would really appreciate first aid tips, I just don't want to stand here and wait for the situation to get worse without doing anything. thanks ! 😊

What symptoms are there? Could the vet recommend anything for you to use on the off chance or would he not do that without an examination?

The symptoms are the flaky skin and hair loss under the nose. She is otherwise pretty normal, eating and running around. The vet would ( and I think could not) recommend anything without examining her, that's why I am at loss...

Is there a different vet nearby that could help? Even if it's not a vet that is particularity recommended for guinea pigs it may be worth just taking him to see someone who can advise on treatment. I know we shouldn't recommend home remedies but seen as the situation seems desperate I would advise that as a last resort you could try looking at videos on the LA guinea pig rescue YouTube channel there is a lot of suggestions about this sort of thing on their which may help until you have access to a vet.

If you really can't get through to a vet on the phone and you can see a clear bald crusty patch like in the photos in our ringworm guide, try nizoral (dandruff) shampoo from a pharmacy. It is rather harsh on the skin but effective against ringworm. To be honest, so far I can't really see anything on the picture.

Here is our ringworm hygiene guide if you need it. if you haven't got access to antifungal disinfectant, just use normal cleaner and disposable wipes to mechanically remove as many spores as possible.
