Ahh, guinea pigs - the perfect pet for children (and their responsible parent of course).

We have a pretty constant stream of children through our house, and most of them adore the guinea pigs.

Today was no exception - the girls had friends over to play and it was all going well.

Until one of their friends came to find me.
She looked upset, and asked to speak to me 'in private'.
I braced myself for a tale of woe about being left out of a game or name calling.

I took her to the kitchen, where she quietly said that sadly one of our guinea pigs had died.
She looked like she was about to burst into tears as she revealed that on her way to the toilet she had popped in to say hello to the guinea pigs, and that was when she noticed that one of them was dead.
I told her I was sure they were fine, but she was adamant - Ruby was laying totally still in the cage and not moving at all.
Ruby was dead.

I tried to reassure her, and we went over to the cage so she could show me poor dead Ruby.
And this is the sight I was greeted with.

Let's just say that a small rustling of a plastic bag and Ruby was instantly revived, and our small house guest was deeply relieved (although possibly also traumatised for life).

Ahh guinea pigs - never a dull moment.

She is a great kid.
And it still takes a lot of courage for the younger kids to approach me on their own.
I still don't speak their language fluently (they speak Swiss dialect and I speak mostly High German), and they know the conversation will be awkward.
But she did it anyway because everyone loves the pigs (even Ruby, who truth be told is pretty awful to everyone except DD1!).

I am literally laughing my head off at this. I love when guinea pigs sleep like this, it cracks me up.

My Dindy used to do that to me on a regular basis, I'm sure she has contributed to my grey hair collection.

That is so cute and so funny! What a lovely thoughtful child as well. I just read this to my husband who proclaimed that Guinea pigs in general have a 'lot to answer for'.

I love how Ruby sleeps!

Oh Ruby little did you know that lovely snooze you were enjoying would bring such trauma to a young child!

And what a sweet sounding child. I wish we had some like that coming over for play dates (urgh I don't like that phrase but find myself using it all the time now?!)

:)) :)) ha ha so funny

Look at those little black feeties! Reports of her demise are greatly exaggerated!

Oh wow that's the difference between kids in Europe and kids in UK children in the UK would just tell the parent in front of all the other kids that the pig was dead without even thinking to consider how the other kids would react
At least that's what happens in Scotland anyway from my experience
You must've got such a fright
You're right there never is a down moment in the house when there are hoglet around

Oh Ruby! You naughty piggy!

I have to admit it was an extremely convincing crime scene pose, had she bothered with the chalk outline there'd be no denying she had passed.

That poor kid! It's so sad but also so funny at the same time.

Ruby is most definitely our 'flopper'.
She toddles around the cage, endlessly squeaking away to herself, and then will suddenly just flop.
She sprawls out anywhere, and is an extremely confident and relaxed pig.
Until you try to handle her in any way - then she is a total horror - unless you are DD1 whom she adores.

DD1 of course finds it hilarious - 'Look Mummy, just call her to the front of the cage and scoop her up like this.'
Then Ruby clambers onto DD1s shoulder, and settles there quite happily chattering in her ear.
I try to scoop Ruby up ad she immediately bites me, and squeals until DD1 comes and rescues her, and then tells me off for 'traumatizing her sensitive guinea pig'.

That's so sweet, poor little girl i would have been in tears if that was me
Ruby has her followers by the sounds of things

Piggies get away with anything, all they have to do is yawn, or beg, or squint their eyes, or just exist really:D

I know this is really old, but hilarious!
There was actually a slight end note to this story.
Just like a game of Chinese Whispers, what actually happened (as relayed by our visiting child) was slightly different to how I remember it.
After I miraculously 'revived' Ruby, she went back upstairs and told the other kids how Ruby looked dead, but had been bought back to life by a rustling bag and piece of lettuce.
A day or two later DD2 came home from school, and lay down on the living room floor.
I asked if she was ok, and she said 'No, I'm dead, but you could probably bring me back to life with a biscuit'.
Such a sweet, sensitive child
