Day 3 of just bathing (saline solution).. eye is doing ok, she's putting weight on, already 'feels' a bit heavier and better in herself when I pick her up..
Had a few hours out on the lawn this afternoon, put a feed bowl in too full of nuggets, and she was tooig and froing from it all afternoon, and nomming on grass..
She's out in the bedroom with me atm, and I defo see a spring in her step :))

Am so pleased, it's nice to get some good news in the Health & Illness section.. Hope your little girl continues to get better x

I think having a couple of weeks off work has made the biggest difference, but i am going to try and keep on top of things with her, I think i prefer her happy, and if she prefers this sort of treatment, which seems to work for her, i'll stick to it. Fingers crossed she won't have to go back to the vets for a long time..

Absolutely thrilled to bits to hear this news!!!

YAY FOR LIQUORICE XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Ever heard of a piggy loving a good scratch behind the ear? She adores it.. in all the years I've had piggies, i've never had one like her! She's one of a kind :))

Is pondering as to whether to put her back on the tiacil today as although no infection present, she's holding her eye back a bit at times (not all the time), but the tear duct isn't inflamed.. she's bright and eating ok, i'm just worried about the side effects - the weight loss and loss of appetite caused by these drugs..
I've continued to salt water her eye several times a day, in the hope of keeping things at least 'static'.. I couldn't bare to put her through more treatment, she got really fed up last time :(

Oh no I am sorry to hear this. Has the vet mentioned removing her eye? I know it sounds drastic but if it is causing her pain and misery then maybe that would be better? My Marble had to have her eye removed and it did not effect her.

Her eye seems ok again, sneaky monkey has just gone behind my back and broke into the spinach bag.... nothings ever plain sailing is it? It was not like has been at times, could an allergy cause this? This seems to coincide with clean out time, she likes to sleep in the house, and that's where the girls spend most of their time, if you know what I mean?
She's sat next to me, I think if she opens it any further, it'll be bigger than the moon lol!

Please do not stop/start or interchange eye treatments involving antibiotics - whether it is tiacil, maxitrol, chloramphenicol or fucithalmic.

Actually this applies to any antibiotic whether it be for a URI, UTI, eye, ear or other infection. On/off/on can generate antibiotic resistant bugs/infections.

A receding eyeball could also be a pain response - and might be associated with an ear infection or dental issues in addition or as an alternative to your current diagnosis of a blocked tear duct.

I am too upset and tired tonight to post in more detail because I have literally just come back from having another one of my pigs put to sleep with something that started with a similar receding eyeball (the previous one was a suspected blocked tear duct).

This latest case was caused by an ear infection, the pain (in conjunction with a dental issue) caused th eyeball to recede. Unfortunately the eye then ended up scratched with a corneal ulcer and it has gone horribly horribly wrong because eye treatments were changed and changed back again between fucithalmic and tiacil resulting in a complete destruction of the eye - (and because ear and teeth were also involved this complicated matters enormously)

There is no need to worry - just don;t start the tiacil again yet please as this is not good practice and you could be creating more problems for yourself and your piggie.

I will send you a PM so if you want, we can have a chat (once I get my nose out of the box of kleenex).

Once again - please do NOT start tiacil again at this moment. If you are concerned then please contact your vet first before re-starting any antibioitics.

x

I changed the bedding to a recycled pellet type bedding.. curiosity really, as she always seems to get worse just before clean out day before clean out (I deep litter with shavings and hay on top)..
The cleanout was 2 nights ago. I've also changed to bathing her eye in cold tea rather than salt. The difference is remarkable, she's eating better, she's showing more interest in her surroundings, and up to her old tricks.
I give her the volterol once a day (every 24 hours) just before bedtime, and have now established, that this wasn't responsible for her going off her food. Her droppings are normal, have been for a full 3 days now. I only have enough for one more dose, and will see how she goes, i'll probably book her in again at the vets for weds, if she starts slipping again.
I suffer a blocked sinuses, and they also effect my hearing to a degree, I know, can't compare really, and I may ask them to check that ear as well, to see if there's anything going on there..
She hasn't been on the tiacil for about a week now. The eye looks ok, fully open, and she's no longer half closing it, or holding it back :)
She's also started eating her broccoli again, and almost falling out of the cage to get it :))

Pebbles, I don't like keeping her on any form of antibiotics, I also don't like her being poked and prodded by the vet, I know she hates it, and as soon as we step into the car, she goes subdued and quiet.. The vet never at any stage said Tiacil isn't safe to use. I was never 100% happy with it, as it reacted to her healing eye when it was punctured.
The eye is no longer damaged itself, the problem lies with the tear duct. I have read some where, that a dry eye can cause this very problem, makes the tear duct over produce, which could have been what started this in the first place.
I know it's not dental, she has no problem eating her dry nuggets, timothy hay (the really coarse stuff) and her veg. I watch her eating, and she never pulls faces or spits out (I've had a dental piggy in the past, so know what to look for)..
The vet suggested that this may be an ongoing issue that from time to time will require treatment, but hopefully as things settle down I won't need to take such drastic action..

Back to the vets for another course of volterol (ran out) it seems to keep her comfortable, vets happy with her eye, she's holding it well, hasn't gained any weight since the last visit, but she did loose some in between, and has clearly regained some, so fingers crossed we have a reasonably happy medium.
She's a bit quiet this morning, that'll be partly the fact she's been to the vets, she really hates it, but fingers crossed the visits are further apart than before (3 weeks to date).
She's had the dye in her eye, no sign of any ulceration, the ball itself is healthy, this is all down to the tear duct.
We decided if she does need another course of antibiotics it's going to be the fuc (can't remember the full name) rather than the tiacil, as it also creates havoc with her appetite as well as irritates her eye.
I had her and her sister BonBon out last night, and they were reeking havoc in the bedroom, so she still has the zest for life :))

It sounds like she has improved. It is really good she has not lost more weight.

Wow! What a turn round! She is positively bouncing off the walls tonight! She's doing stuff tonight, she hasn't done in 18 months..
If you spend enough time around each piggy, you get to know exactly what mood they're in. This morning, I knew she wasn't happy, she was moaning a lot, and wasn't interest in licking my fingers (her cute trait).. cue vet, cue eye drops.. 5 mins after applying, she was her usual self..
Tonight, she's been sat at on my lap, gurgling contently tonight after play time on the carpet, quite loudly too I must add, her eye free of any discharge..
She 'murdered' her lettuce tonight, and is currently enjoying her supper :))
I'm so relieved the infection hasn't returned :(|)

WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKY WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Oh dear Liquorice this is just wonderful news! The girls send you lots of friendly brrrrrrrrrrr's and kisses too xoxoxoxoxoxo
Oh love what a relief to finally see Liquorice being more like her pigself again x)x)x)
Your nurse skills have been incredible! WELL DONE XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

"If you spend enough time around each piggy, you get to know exactly what mood they're in"

I couldn't agree more! I know this only too well!

Aww she sounds so happy. Maybe that shows she is feeling her old self again. Aww so lovely. :)

So pleased for you and Liquorice! x

It's become a lot easier to treat her eye, though I have to tell her that's why she's sat on a tea towel, not to supply her with greens :))
She immediately started looking for the green stuff as soon as she set foot on the towel, tried eating the tea soaked cotton wool, and fidgeted all the way through bathing :(|)
Fingers crossed she'll be back to normal soon - before xmas I hope! :))

Edited to add, each day after bathing, it becomes harder to tell there was anything wrong at all, I mean she still gets a crusty eye, but it's no longer bothering her as such, and she clearly appreciates the bathing and eye drop, even if she is becoming a wriggler (well that comes hand in hand with feeling better :) )

Liquorice is chasing BonBon around, rattling, and trying to hump her, yep, normality resumes........... now it's Humbugs turn.......... do you think a certain piggies in season? Or asserting her authority (out to regain her throne)? :(|)

I think they enjoyed the music at the start........they were wheeeking in tune :(|):(|):(|)
What a wonderful sound wheeeking happy pigglies! x)
Liquorice is looking fabulous x)xoxo

She continues to do well, not a fatty, but not too skinny either, she is back to her cheeky self and eating well. I have to remember, she's not a youngster anymore, but the fact she feels well and up to her old tricks shows she's happy and that's the most important thing!
Still on volterol eye drops for the forseeable future.
Her droppings are of normal consistency, shes eating everything offered, so that's half the battle won! :(|)

Bit of a backward step today, she's been doing so well. She's going off her food again :( Turned her nose up at cucumber and carrots today. She was a bit off a week ago last thurs, and seemed to perk up after vet visit, so I'm pretty sure it's not the meds as she's only on volterol, and has been for over a month now with no side effects.
She was fine last night, ate up all her greens. Here's hoping it's just a glitch like before and she'll be fine again tomo.
Just given her and her sisters a great big pile of grass and dandelion leaves and she's munching away at that :) Luckily Oh has been on a veg run today and brought some pak choi (which the little monkey won't eat today) some lettuce (she's entertaining that) and some apple (won't find out until later)..
She's still eating her nuggets and timothy hay, so not a total refusal to eat, just a red card..
I did notice this morning that the fridge temp is low, so perhaps she's got a chill on her tummy? Plus it's colder in general, so will be sticking the heating on again later, to make sure she's warm enough over night.
I gave her some probiotics in water this morning, she supped 3 full syringes (well most of it, it kept dripping down my hands..)
We mostly have good days now though, she's been well for a month now, so hoping this isn't a slippery slope 8...

Oh I hope she starts to pick up. At least she is still eating hay. That is the main thing. Get well soon little one.

I feel as though we're on a rollercoaster.. I can't help but think at this point in time that I may not still have her come christmas8..... it's been a constant uphill battle, and I think she's tiring of it all :...

I can understand how you feel. Just see if she picks up. Are you sure you would not be able to have her eye removed? I cannot help but feel this would end her having to take medication. Please do not be angry with me saying that. I only say it as my Marble had her eye removed.
