Sulfatrim Dose Help

Our guinea pig Lon-Lon is suffering with a recurring abscess on her jaw (have attached a picture). We are planning to take her to Northampton to see Simon Maddock as soon as we can, as we are not confident in our local vets. In the mean time, she has been given Metacam and Sulfatrim (16mg/ml + 80mg/ml) after they 'lanced' (witha needle, leaving a tiny hole we cannot flush through) her abscess for the second time in under 2 weeks yesterday. However, we are very worried about the dose they have prescribed her: 1ML TWICE A DAY (2ml daily).
These seems HUGE considering the suggested rabbit dose on the leaflet is 0.2-0.3ml/kg twice daily.
Lon-Lon currently weighs 0.85kg (850g).

@Wiebke - sorry to bother you but we have seen on other similar posts that you have some knowledge on Sulfatrim doses?

Sulfatrim is adult strength unflavoured septrin (i.e. double the strength of the banana flavoured pediatric septrin).
It seems too high to me, too, but I have no experience whether this high dose is still safe or not.

Please have your piggy seen by Simon as soon as possible; keep in mind that the clinic is booking up fast with Christmas approaching.

PS: If it is any consolation to you, I had to make an emergency trip to the clinic with my Dylan yesterday. He was found to have a jaw/dental root abscess brewing but it is not yet at the stage where it can be lanced. He's been put on zithromax in the hope that we can stop the abscess from coming up fully and causing problems over the Christmas holidays.

Thank you very much for getting back to us so quickly and for tagging some other people, glad we are not just overworrying about the seemingly high dose.
Sorry to hear about Dylan, hope the Zithromax does it's job for you both!
And yes, thank you - I can imagine it is! We will contact the clinic first thing Monday, so finger's crossed.

Try to ring up soon after 8 am if you are looking for their same day emergency slot as otherwise you may need to have to wait for quite some time. The Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic
 
Hi there,

this does seem like a very high dosage, though I doubt it will do a huge amount of harm I would certainly call your vet and query this to check it is correct and the dose they actually wanted you to give.

Hello, thank you for your response! We are back to see the vets Monday morning for a 'check-up' so will defintely ask then - we wanted to give them a call today but were worried about calling their emergency out-of-hours number...
We only gave her 0.6ml this morning as we were so unsure about the strangely high dose and worryingly her poos are NOT looking normal at all (can attach pictures)? We are giving her some Pro-C probiotic and Critical Care to try and help support her gut with the antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medicines we are giving, but the soft, joined, worm-looking poos are worrying?
 
If you are planning to call Cat & Rabbit, make sure to tell that its emergency and that your piggy has a big abscess that really needed to be tend to.

If you really can't get through or managed to get an appointment, I can recommend going to Cheshire Pet in Holmes Chapel. Kristina Hunter is the resident exotic vets there (although her last day will be on 24th Dec and the new exotic vet will replace her in January).

Another is Birch Heath Vets in Tarporley, Cheshire. But take note that this is an exotic vets and they will be more expensive.

Thank you very much, we will be sure to! And in the case we can't get through to them it's nice to know some back up vets, we really appreciate the suggestions :luv:
