Junior Guinea Pig
Hi everyone! I have a skinny pig named Dante, and I’m hoping to get some advice about his lower front teeth because I noticed a huge gap between them this morning. I attached images of his teeth.
For some context, Dante was having floor time yesterday, and while I was scattering his veggies, I accidentally stepped on him. He immediately ran under the bed. I didn’t hear him scream or make any noise. It all happened so quickly, so I wasn’t sure which part of his body I had stepped on.
I checked on him right away. At first, it seemed like he might be limping on his right front leg or not putting as much weight on it when he was standing still. However, he seemed fine when walking or running. He also ate some of his veggies, and I initially thought he was eating hay, but then I noticed that he kept tilting his head while trying to eat.
I examined him again to check his legs and body for any signs of injury or pain, but everything seemed fine. He also didn’t squeak or react unusually when I touched him. However, my partner later noticed that he was having difficulty eating hay and was tilting his head again while trying to eat.
We decided to take him to the ER to get him checked out. The vet told us that nothing appeared to be broken, but he seemed to be in pain. They gave him an injection for pain relief and sent us home with pain medication for three days.
We gave him Critical Care last night, and this morning I noticed that there was a huge gap between his lower front teeth. My partner gently checked inside his mouth with her finger and said that his other teeth seemed fine, but the front teeth looked concerning. Dante won’t let me examine his mouth any further, so I’m not sure what else might be going on. His poop was normal yesterday but he barely pooped last night and today but it seems normal.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Could the gap between his lower front teeth be related to the accident, and could it explain why he’s having trouble eating hay?
I’m wondering whether I should continue just giving him Critical Care and the pain medication prescribed by the ER while monitoring him, or if I should take him back to our regular vet for another examination since I’m not sure if the ER saw the teeth gap. Will they just tell me the exact same thing?
I’m really worried about him and would appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thank you so much!
