Hello! I’ve had my piggies for about three weeks now and half of their cage is a folded towel, while the other half is paper bedding. When they’re litter trained I want to switch entirely over to fleece, but it’s so expensive to get started! Would towels make an appropriate replacement? I haven’t had issues so far with smell or urine absorption and I fully clean the cage - including washing the towels - twice a week.

The idea with fleece is to provide a layer which lets wetness through into the absorbent layer (towels /newspaper /puppy pads) below and stops the guineas walking on the wet surface. Their feet can suffer from walking on their own urine. It's the same principle with washable nappies - in fact my daughter's old nappies now get used as the absorbent layer under the fleece in our hutch! Custom fleece hutch liners are pricey. I just cut ordinary anti-pill fleece from a fabric shop to size and laid it over the absorbent layer. Hope that helps.

Hello and welcome. .
I use both towles and fleece.. if they having a fresh box to play in or sleep etc. I put a towel in bottom and lots hay . . 20210216_195611.webp
Every 2/3 days fresh box etc. Towels get wet with Pee but better than the box which can be smelly
