I'm looking to buy 2 piggies, ideally females but if they aren't available maybe 2 males. I've heard they are more likely to fight, is that in all cases or just when you've bought them separately. I was thinking if they are already living together when I buy them will they be more likely to get on?

If you get 2 piggies from the same rescue they should be bonded properly unlike pet shops where they just put any 2 together regardless of whether they're compatible. However if they haven't already passed their teenage years, when they get to that point, hormones will increase and it's possible they won't get along so well then. Of course they might be fine but there's always the possibility.

Adopt, don't buy!

As above, it depends how you get them. Rescue centre piggies will be correctly bonded.

Two boars will only fight If they are not compatible in character. Two sows will also fall out if they are not correctly matched.
If you just buy two piggies from a pet shop you have no idea if they are compatible and whether their bond will work longer term - that applies to females as well. It doesn’t matter if you get them from the same shop and If they are already living together. Two piggies sold in a pet shop will just be put together for sale with little to no regard of their character compatibility going forward.

Thank you that's helpful, I was aiming for girls but I've found a really nice place selling piggies but they only do boys but I shall ask about their ages and how long they've already been together for a better idea.

Their ages and how long they’ve been together is not completely relevant if you are looking at youngsters. once piggies hit their teens (4 months to 14 months), their dominance etc changes their hormones hit and they get their own ideas on who they want to live with.
Having two boars of the same age can also be problematic if they are both hitting their hormone spikes at the same time.

That doesn’t mean to say that there are always problems, it’s simply not the case, but in buying two youngsters, you can’t know what will happen down the line, so planning for the worst by ensuring you can separate them if their fall out, but hoping for the best is the always the way to go.

Theres only 2 rescues near me and they never have any available I've been looking for months. Plus I'm aiming to buy a pre established pair which they rarely have. The place I'm looking at is a pet shop that's part of a nearby wildlife park so they have much better expertise and conditions than chain pet stores

What country do you live in?
Are you sure that there are only two rescues?
I am linking both the US and UK rescue finder for you to double-check.

I hope that this helps! ☺
I'm in the UK, I shall have a proper look through that list tomorrow thank you, looks like it might contain a few extras I havent seen in my search. My issue is theres more than 2 I can get to but those won't travel to mine for the home check.

Have you asked if they will home check via photos and phone calls? Some will do.

It is always best where possible to adopt rather than buy. It’s safer all round. But, if you really can’t, then as I said, all you can do is prepare for the worst but hope for the best. Regardless of sex or age, they must be character compatible to have a successful bond and if they aren’t, then there will always be problems.

You’ve been given great advise above. Regarding the home check, I doubt they would do it in person at the moment. First thing you need to do is to email the rescues and let them know that you’re looking to adopt piggies. They will also be better placed to suggest those that may be suitable for your household.

Good luck with the search and do post photos when you finally get them. Doing research first is the best start to having pets, especially ones as complex (and expensive) as guinea pigs. Start that vet fund now as well, they’re classed as exotic pets and costs can run up.

PS character compatibility, as mentioned above, is the most important thing. Boars have a really bad reputation but that’s probably down to bad matching/bonding. There are plenty of members on here who have/had boar pairs that get on well. I’m one of them, and my boars have a good relationship.

When I contacted the RSPCA, they asked for photos of my set up and asked questions about my experience. They never visited.

It's worth asking, I think.

Aw that's nice to hear, yeah I'd love boys I have way more name ideas for them than girls for some reason. But I dont really mind what I get at the end of the day.

Yeah I was thinking surely they dont wanna be going in peoples houses at the moment. Thanks!

I have a boar pair too. I didn't have them through their teenage years but they've got on really well all the time I've had them

I have adopted from rescues close to me and further afield. A RSPCA branch (Walsall) sent someone from my local branch to homecheck but for 3 of my rescue adoptions I have conversed through email and over the phone. I have discussed my set up and sent photos over as well. It's worth mentioning that you have joined this forum too as they then know that you have access to good quality information and have been doing your research :)
