Lots of love to Eliza, your doing so well for her x x

Thank you :)
How is Bon Bon getting on? Did her eye weep at all after the op? xx

Yes, we have had a bit of weeping on Bon Bons eye but not till a few days after the op. It happened with Biscuit to. How is Eliza getting on now?

Bon Bon is a lot better but still not 100% having to take her to sleep alone at night xx

Good that Bon Bon is feeling better and I hope she is 100% soon.

Thank you, this is reasuring to know. Eliza was back at the vets last night as she started bleeding from her nose but it turns out it was built up discharge.

I just want her better and living with her friends again as she looks sad at times. She has been in the shed with her friends but in the hospital cage, but she tries to get out and I've had to bring her in again to monitor her after yesterday. Back at the vets on Monday xx

I'm at the vets every 3 days for injections and I feel the same. You can tell they miss their guinea pig pals. Bon Bon is still sleeping indoors but spends her days in the hutch unless out n cant keep a check on her.

Hope Eliza is back with her friends asap xx

My piggies live free range in a shed. Eliza was in a cage in the shed for a couple of days before the op and she was in there are Thursday but is back indoors being monitored after the bloody nose incident.

How Bon Bons appetite? Eliza is eating but not as well as I'd like :( She prefers eating hay to anything else right now.

They certainly do miss their piggy pals

Eliza had a run around the living room today and coped surprisingly well. She wheeked for her friends though and looked surprised when they didn't come out (they were in the shed).

Her eye socket is now discharging clear liquid :( Vet did say discharge / drainage is normal (unless it is gushing out) but I feel so sorry for her :(

Back at the vets tomorrow for another follow up and nail trims for all piggies.

Just thought I would update you all with Eliza.

Unfortunatley it isn't good news, I am so worried about my girl and after everything, I have had enough :(

After the clear discharge, Eliza's eye started weeping yellow pus that smelt awful last Sunday. During the day, her appetite went and at her vet check on Monday, she had lost 100g and was cleaned. I brought her home where she thankfully started to eat again. Well, her eye just continued to weep the horrible pus but thankfully she has gained the weight she had lost and is more or less back to her normal self.

I took Eliza back on Wednesday. The pus had pushed her stitches out and the vet was concerned about what was behind there so she was given another GA, had the eye socket cleaned, drained and restiched. Thankfully there is nothing sinister going on but she has a bad infection where the eye once was.

I thought we had turned a corner yesterday but this morning the pus is back :( The vet is hopeful as the infection hasn't entered her bloodstream and Eliza is acting perfectly normal but I am so worried. I am to keep her clean over the weekend and take her back to the vets on Monday.

I have had so much bad luck with my piggies this year and am not capable of looking after them properly. After the group I have now, I have made he decision not to have anymore.

You shouldn't beat yourself up, you have had a run of bad luck and its nothing to do with how you care for them, i'm sure you look after them as well as any of us and spoil them rotten. Eyes are funny things and infections are easy to set in, especially after major surgery, the plus point is she is eating and acting normally that's a positive in my book, hopefully you will turn a corner very soon and be able to enjoy your piggies again x

Oh Claire :( Huge hugs!

You're an absolutely wonderful piggy mum, please try and stay positive. I know it's really tough when they're poorly, but just try and remember all the happiness they bring you too.

Sending lots of healing vibes for Eliza

Cath x

Sorry to hear that Eliza is still poorly, I am having a problem at the moment and going to the vets with Ruby her eye is very red and slightly swollen, I did notice that her teeth were uneven and on a slant too, the vet has trimmed them and is going to review her again next week. She too has lost weight, which made me concerned about her teeth. After some searching about on the net I have found this

I know fishing about on the net can cause you to worry but it makes for an interesting read.

Please don't say that Claire, you are one of the most caring piggie slaves ever. You have just had a huge bad run of luck. Eliza is still with you and that is credit to you please remember this. You are attentive and very caring towards all your piggies.
When Megan was rescued she had an awful eye infection that had been left and her eye had turned to pus. So piggies can recover from things like this. Lots of healing vibes to Eliza and huge huge hugs to you. You are a wonderful person Claire, don't ever forget that. xx x

i really feel for you. :( because we love them so much, we never feel like we do enough when we are really doing everything we possibly can. she's lucky to have you. it can be such hard work i know and after the year you've had, i'm not surprised you're feeling so upset about everything. i hope eliza will be ok. x

Oh Claire don't say that :(
I have not been a member on here all that long but I have read a lot of your posts- you have helpful suggestions &caring comments. Anyone can see that you are obviously devoted to your piggys! Many owners would have just given up on their poorly piggies, they wouldn't have given them the care attention, love and devotion that you have.

Like you said its just a horrible run of bad luck :(
These things happen &your Eliza is lucky to have such an excellent piggy slave!

Just think of all those poor piggies in the future that could miss out on sucha wonderful life that you can so obviously provide.
A sad day for piggies everywhere if you don't have more :(
Although I know circumstances change, but please don't give up on the piggies just because you wrongly think you're a bad slave!
YOU ARE NOT!

I had a bad run a year or so ago&wondered why I kept doing it&realised it was because , like you I cared. I decided no matter how much it breaks my heart when I lost one, for those funny little fur-ball characters I had to keep providing a slave that would pamper to their needs & give them what some poor deprived animals could only wish for.

I have been busting to find out how Eliza has been doing whilst the forum has been down, glad to hear she's still holding her own :)
Remember... Eliza has only got this far because you are so capable.
Healing vibes to Eliza &a big hug for you. Keep your chin up and hope everything goes ok.
Keep us all updated.
Xx

Thank you for your kind words everyone but after this week my decision till stands and I really do not know what to do with Eliza :(

Eliza was at the vets again yesterday. Her eye socket has been cleaned and drained again which was very distressing to watch :( Half of her eye is now open to allow the pus to drain out but how long can this carry on for?

My vet is happy to try her on Marbocyl but it has to be ordered in due to them only having it in tablet form but they want to see how she gets on with the baytril first as she has only been on the higher dose since last Wednesday. Thankfully *touch wood* the probiotics are doing their job. But how am I meant to know if they baytril is working when I think we have a breakthrough and then the pus starts again :( She has been pus free since yesterday up until about half an hour ago so it must build up in her eye socket?

I am also worried about her being evicted from the group. I can't bare the thought of her not being accepted back in when and if she eventually gets better :(

I just don't know what to do and as my attention is on her, my other 3 piggies are being neglected apart from being fed and watered :(

Your other piggies are not neglected Claire your focus is just on Eliza as it needs to be, you know the 'furry bellies' they dont care as long as veg and hay is being delivered!

Your doing so well, I can only recomend speaking to Vicky from Walsall RSPCA on facebook as she had megan in her care when Moo's eye was removed and the socket was full of pus. She may be able to give you some idea on how long it went on for.

Huge hugs to you and love to Eliza. have a hug x

How is Eliza in herself?

Thank you. I may try that. I didn't know you had been through similar.

The vet said that the pus is more liquidy rather than cottage cheesy. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Eliza is fine in herself although I know she is missing her friends.

Looking at her from the left hand side, you wouldn't think there was anything wrong with her. She is eating and drinking fine and thankfully regained the weight she lost after the first surgery.

I just feel so guilty to the other 3 and I am due to move house in just less than two weeks so don't know what I'm going to do if Eliza hasn't improved by that time :(

We havent Claire but when Miss Moo was rescued by RSPCA she had puss coming out of an almost closed eye that had been left untreated for at least 3 months. She had an operation to remove the puss from the eye socket, but they couldn't find an actual eye. So Vicky may have an idea on time frames... As she nursed her through this i beleive

It is positive she is eating and drinking. Sorry you are going through all of this, wish there was something I could do to help. x

Thanks Lee. You are doing enough as it is just by being there.

I have just messaged Vicky through the rspca facebook page.

Awful that her eye was left untreated :(

Some people are scum, but there enough good people out there to make me beleive in the kindness of humans rather than the bad side. Hoping Vicky may be able to advise how long it took to heal etc...

Poor Eliza. Sounds like she (and you) are going through a tough time. Hope Eliza feels better soon and heals up well... ((hugs to you and Eliza)) x

Just back from the vets and poor Eliza looks like something from a horror film :( Her eye socket is now completely open as the pus has pushed her stitches out.

The vet feels that leaving it open is the best way to go and to re seal it once the infection has cleared (assuming it clears). There are only so many times she can go under anaesthetic.

She is currently having her eye flushed, drained and cleaned daily. I have been given the option to bring some saline and syringes home with me but I can't say I feel comfortable putting a syringe in her eye socket so until then, it is daily trips to the vets. I guess at least she is having a check up each time. Back tomorrow afternoon.

The vet feels that the antibiotics may finally be kicking in as the pus isn't as frequent and is more liquidly rather than thick. I just feel so sorry for my girl :(

I have been told that the open socket looks much worse than it is as I am not used to it. I have seen worse but it is heartbreaking when it is your own animal.

Apart from missing her friends, Eliza is well in herself.

Please keep those healing vibes and thoughts coming xx

Aww Claire, sending you and Eliza hugs and hope that this nasty infection clears up soon, to put your mind at rest and so that Eliza can get back to something of a normal life.
I am off to the vets with Ruby tomorrow afternoon to find out what is going to happen with her eye that is all red and opaque, I have been treating her with fucithalmic eye cream, but there has been no improvement, I am fearing the worst myself.

Claire - so sorry :( poor little girl. I don't blame you for the daily vets visit, i understand I would be doing the same. Little Eliza will pull through this I am sure. Lots of love to her and to you. x x

@ SharonS - good luck with Ruby tomorrow, hope it goes well and they can get her all fixed up x

I am sorry to hear this Sharon. Fingers crossed for Ruby.

With Eliza, there was no improvement with the drops and if anything, her eye got worse. I never expected this would happen though :(

I have just got home from work and Eliza's socket has a scab forming which I can only assume is pus :( Does my girl really deserve this? I feel so cruel and sad that she is away from her friends :(

I feel so sorry for you and Eliza, in my experience infections get worse before they get better and if the pus is becoming more watery that's a good sign in a way. It sounds like Eliza is a little fighter if its nothing bothering her, hopefully there will be light at the end of the tunnel for you both very shortly x

Exactly the same thing with Ruby, eye is just getting worse, anyhow vet has given me more cream, baytril and metacam to give her one last chance, if no improvement by monday she is going to be Xrayed, then maybe have to remove her eye he said. So I think both our girls need healing vibes desperately.
