Oh you poor ladies :( two and four legged varieties!
Good luck &the biggest buckets of healing vibes to Eliza &ruby, with a big comforting bear hug to Claire & Sharon hope they both improve swiftly &everything heals nicely-no more setbacks :(
Keep up the good work. Love from my 2 girls &I xx

Exactly the same thing with Ruby, eye is just getting worse, anyhow vet has given me more cream, baytril and metacam to give her one last chance, if no improvement by monday she is going to be Xrayed, then maybe have to remove her eye he said. So I think both our girls need healing vibes desperately.

Poor Ruby and poor you :( It really is a horrible thing to have to go through :(

I shall keep everything crossed that Ruby starts to improve and manages to keep her eye but if not, please do not let Eliza's story put you off xx

Which antibiotic is she on ? X

She is currently on baytril. The vet is prepared to change antibiotics to the one beginning with M (sorry, I can't remember the name' but would prefer for Eliza to finish the course of baytril first as she has only been the the higher dose since last Wednesday.

Vet said today that there doesn't seem to be as much pus today as yesterday but I am assuming the pus built up behind the sealed eye lid before there was enough of it to leak through so I just don't know.

The pus is drying crusty around the opening to the eye cavity where as before it was ouzing out of the sealed eye before it was opened up xx

How is Eliza today or is it too early to say if the new antibiotics are taking effect?
Did your vet suggest seperating her from your other piggies claire, hope Ruby is ok to remain with her friends because all my space is taken up with foster piggies!

FIngers crossed that Ruby can stay with her friends. How is she doing today?

Eliza is pretty much the same. Chris came with me to the vet today and after seeing her eye being flushed and cleaned, we nave agreed to try doing it ourselves at home. Its heartbreaking though as she screams and bleeds slightly when the scabby pus comes off :( I have an appointment still for Monday in case I need it and one on Thursday to re evaluate the situation.

Eliza is currently in the living room and her friends in the shed as I can't risk them licking her open eye socket :(

She was still with them before the eye was removed and for a short time in the hospital cage in the shed before this infection started.

My poor girl :( xx

Aww bless, poor poor Eliza, I really hope this infection clears up soon for her, must be heartbreaking hearing her squeaking as her eye is cleaned.
Ruby's eye is just the same today, I wish I could say we have some improvement, I really don't want her to lose her eye, but as the days go by it looks as if we may have no option.
She had a head tilt a couple of weeks ago along with her eye being poorly, the vet is wondering if there is some sort of nasty bacteria lurking behind this eye that is stuborn to treat, he is going to xray on monday and make a decision from then.:Ayociexp118:

Poor Eliza, hope the Marbocyl works quickly. I also recommend Zithromax as Debbie has said.

All the best for Monday and I really do hope the x ray gives you some answers. I am still keeping everything crossed that Ruby manages to keep her eye.

Please get a swab from both ear and eye and get cultures/antibioitic sensitivity done before any more antibiotics are given...simultaneous ear and eye could be multi-drug resistant pseudomonas for which the only antibioitic is gentamycin injections. I have had 3 such cases in my herd over the last three years. I now always ask for cultures in a head tilt case...and if there is eye involvement as well then that really is an indication it is "no ordinary bug that baytril will fix"

Thank you for your advice, I will suggest this on Monday, having said this the head tilt has corrected itself now and only the eye is still infected.
Will let you know how we get on.

It took two of us but Eliza has just had her first flush and drain at home.

The peoceedure wasn't as bad as I imagined but I feel so guilty :( I cleaned her eye and held her down whist she screamed blue murder and Chris flushed her eye socket. Quite a lot of gunk came out but I guess it's better out than in.

With her socket being open, you can see where the pus is coming from. It seems to be the tissue at the top of the rim so I imagine it is that tissue that is infected.

How long is she on the new antibiotics for Claire, I was talking to Pebble about her experiences with infected eyes and she asked for cultures to be taken for three cases in her guineas, she said the only antibiotic that was sucessful in her guinea pigs case due to drug resistant pseudenomas was Gentamycin Injections.
I am going to quiz my vet tomorrow and see if this would help Ruby.

How interesting.

Eliza was on a low dose of Baytril when this all started. She has now been on a higher dose for two weeks. Vet says we need to give it a chance to work but she is prepared to try others if necessary. I will speak to her again when we go on Thursday.

Please let me know how you get on tomorrow and give Ruby a gentle kiss from me x

Yes I will Claire, thank you.
I am definately going to mention this to my vet, to see what he says, anything has got to be better than having to lose an eye if possible.

Just been to the vets with Eliza and apparently we are heading in the right direction. The pus isn't building up so fast and the tissue inside her eye socket is starting to heal from the inside.

Vet said I won't be able to see it but there is enough improvement so she is reluctant to change the antibiotics due to Eliza starting to respond.

My poor girl has a long way to go but I guess a slight improvement is better than nothing?

I am to carry on with the flushing and draining and we are back at the vets next Tuesday x

Well done little Eliza, good news in the right direction. Claire you are doing an amazing job

Thanks Lee.

To be honest her socket still looks and smells awful especially after cleaning but on Saturday there had been hardly any improvement but today there has been.

I don't understand eyes but it's the tissue that's infected. Apparently the inner tissue is healing up nicely which is what the problem was before. Her eye was re stitched but the tissue was damaged so it wast able to heal.

I feel so guilty keeping her away from her friends but so can't risk them licking her eye cavity out x

Glad to hear that it is a step in the right direction Claire, hopefully on Tuesday next week it will be better news still, we both have little pirate piggies now!
Vet is pleased with Ruby's progress, the wound is healing nicely, looks like all the healing vibes are working.
Thanks to Pebble too with all her support.

This is great news Sharon. I am chuffed that Ruby is doing so well :)

I spoke to the vet about a skin culture and we will do this if we hit a brick wall.

Personally I can't see any difference in Eliza's eye but then I guess I'm not a vet.

I hope Ruby continues to revise well x

It sounds like a nasty infection poor Eliza has got, just hope that he is right when he says he can see a difference, how long is he going to give her before he decides to take the next step, did he give you a time scale?
Poor girl has gone through alot and so have you.
