Hi all.
I posted previously about one of my boys nipping the other and drawing blood. They settled down immediately after that and all has been quiet, however I have been on super high alert watching their behaviour since then.
It seems like dominant pig is using the sub pig’s bed as his personal latrine and so sub pig is getting a smell about him (he isn’t wet, I check him daily). Sub pig is also still pretty small and is always desperate for our attention and wanting to be out of the cage.
Anyway, tonight circumstances meant that sub pig was out playing alone for a short while and honestly, the behaviour change was like a switch was flipped. I left him for a bit to see if he’d wheek for his pal but no. It went from him being super timid when dominating pig was out, not moving as much as he used to, loads of worried wheeking etc and trying to get away, to absolute bedlam! He was popping all over the place, doing zoomies and literally show jumping over and onto anything crossing his path including me! He basically turned into mister mischief!
Now I’m wondering about his cage behaviour. He doesn’t like to come out of his hidey much and will always stay in there away from dom-pig if he can. Dom-pig zoomies in his cage but sub-pig won’t. And I also wonder if he’s peeing in his bed all the time to avoid coming out at all. Maybe it’s not dom-pig wee in there after all? He has also taken to bar chewing but I suspect that’s just to get my attention!
Anyway, maybe I’m being a paranoid pig mum but what do you guys think? Is this behaviour when he’s alone a sign that sub-pig is happier when dom-pig isn’t there? Trial separation perhaps given blood drawn?
Thank you in advance.
