I have a 4 year old male named Sully who recently had gut stasis. We took him to the vet and after a week of antibiotics and a LOT of critical care his gut is totally fine. He poops and pees regularly and gets very excited about food. However in the interrim of not eating correctly his molars have become overgrown... I know hay is the answer and should be 80% of his diet (and believe me, it was prior to his illness as he loves timothy hay) but he struggles to get it into his mouth and therefore will not eat it. I know he's capable with some work of eating hay but I'm worried his molars will cause damage to his mouth and destroy his appetite once again. I need some ideas for making hay more desirable. Should I remove his other food options and only offer critical care and hay? Should I put the hay in a cardboard tube or chew toy? He is eating a good amount of celery spinach and lettuce, but that won't fix his molars.

You will need his vet to diagnose overgrown molars. If that is the case, then the vet will likely need to do some dental work on him before he is able to chew hay properly again

Please don’t overfeed spinach - it should be a couple of leaves once a week only due to its high calcium content
