Hey Everyone,

Been a while since I've been on here - last I was was talking about a terrible time with neutering my little Freddy who got a very large abscess post op (thread is here). He made a recovery from his abscess and has now got a lovely lady friend (Flora!) who he is smitten with - I had never seen Freddy be happy with another GP - they are so cute together!

Anyway, there is one complication, I think he has a prolapsed penis. His penis basically hangs out all the time. Its not swollen and no signs of infection/injury and I keep it clean and try and push back in but it doesn't stay in. Its been like this for about 2 months now. I took him to the vet and they said that it was the first time they had ever seen this, and provided loxi to see if any inflammation goes down and helps it go back in. Honestly since the whole fiasco with the abscess I have little faith in my vet and I think I want to get him seen by another experienced vet to make sure the prolapse is treated correctly.

Would anyone know of a good vet that has dealt with a prolapsed penis before? I am based in London, but am willing to travel further out within reason (I drive).
Also, has anyone had a prolapse last for this long before and can give any practical tips etc.

Thanks so much

Hi, I am very sorry that little Freddy’s penis is hanging out. The problem you have is drying out

I’m afraid I can’t help with a vet in your area, have you had a look at our recommended vet’s list? But when my late Edwards penis was hanging out and I took him to the vets, it turned out he had debris around his penis and in his foreskin. The vet nurse cleaned him up and his penis retracted back in to his foreskin with a little manipulation and lubricant by gentle hands. It may be something worth considering? x

Would the cat and rabbit clinic be within reach to you in Duston? I assume it would be around an hour's drive each way depending on where you are in London.

The Beaumont Sainsbury's Animal Hospital has a great exotics team. They are based round the side of the main hospital. Polo has been there twice. They are a teaching hospital and have great vets. Their prices are reasonable too

I forgot to mention, as the penis is very delicate and can easily be damaged, please do not attempt to retract it yourself especially if you do not know what the problem is x

I gave them a call this afternoon and they said that the initial consultation would be £210, is this normal prices for this type of vet visit? My local vet has been around £30 for consultation so it is a v big jump (I appreciate it is an exotic vet but a jump that big seems huge?!) thanks so much!

I paid £80 for each visit including medication. I am surprised by the quote. I'm not sure why it is so much higher than what I paid.

Maybe it is more because they don't expect it to be just a consultation (ie check over the animal and prescribe meds ) - like with dentistry they will probably want to take him to a treatment room and try to sort the problem out as it isn't something drugs would resolve

If you are worried about the amount, you could always ask them to explain the cost with a itemised report 🙂

Yes just ask politely what it covers, you always feel bad questioning them but you need to know.

I’d definitely recommend an appointment at the Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic in Northampton. Very experienced with guinea pigs and consult fee is £62.

Boar Problems 'Down Below' (Penis, Impaction, Testicles & Neutering, Mammary Tumours & Grease Gland)

Have you had a read of the relevant bits of the Boar Problems guide (linked above)? Perhaps that may help a bit.

Hope you can get your boy seen by a knowledgeable vet soon.

Hey Everyone,

I know it's been ages since I last responded on here, but thanks so much for all your recommendations! I thought I would just give an update in case anyone in the future is having a similar problem - as it doesn't seem to be very common!

I called Beaumont Sainsbury again and they said as Freddy had seen another vet they will only take him as a referral, which was the £210 quoted (but if he was taken as a new patient it would be £60...!) - they wouldn't accept him as a new patient so that was annoying.

Thanks to the recommendations here we took a trip to Northampton to the Cat and Rabbit care clinic. Freddy was seen by a lovely vet there... I think his name was Simon?! but don't quote me on that! Freddy was such a champ on the drive there and back, he was eating his veg and pottering around.

The vet had a look at Freddy's privates and said it was the neatest looking guinea pig willy he had ever seen! (We made sure to tell this to Freddy's guinea wife - Flora - when we got home ;)!) He said that although it 'hang' out, as long as it didn't get injured, he can live a normal happy life with it. He said the option would be to operate and stitch it back in, but actually that wouldn't be too great right now in these circumstances as he would have the rest of his life to have dirt building up inside the prepuce, which would maybe get nasty. He also said there wouldn't really be any skin to use to stitch it back in as it is too neat and not 'cauliflower' enough yet! As he gets older it might be something that he will need to have operated on, but for now it is all good. He told me to keep doing what I was doing to keep it clean, so Freddy continues to have his 3-4 weekly bum baths (where he sits in a bowl and eats a leaf while I clean it with some small animal shampoo and water)!

Honestly was the best decision taking him to the clinic, and so good to have peace of mind. He is living his best life and is popcorning, running around his cage and being bossed around by his wife all the time! Attaching my fave recent pic of him, and as always a massive thank you to this lovely community for being so responsive and helpful with everything - I am sure I will be back needing more help from you lovely experienced guinea pig owners in the future! :)
