Ref: Guinea Pig Not Eating, Possibly Teeth? Need Advice

I met you with Debbie earlier at the clinic. Glad to hear your piggy was able to be treated and wasn't as bad as you thought! My Benji dropped from 1.1kg - 700kg in about 2mths and 90g in 1 week so your piggy is relatively healthy and fat in comparison lol

Hope she manages to get back to full health and you don't need to see Simon again.

Ah yes, nice to meet you too, hope your pig is picking up :)

Jonis eaten a few pieces of pepper today, and is still trying. When she is eating it takes her a while to chew it up.
I did notice a big difference in her when she had her painkiller, but i haven't started the antibiotics yet (wanted to see if she improved first and still needed them - also was hard to get them into her yesterday, and don't want to start them at an awkward time as they are once every 24hrs).

Since 10.30 i have managed to get about 30 syringes of CriticalCare in, and its nearly 8 now. I think when she has had the painkiller she is a lot more cooperative!
Still a way off the 120ml target!

I would start the antibiotics if Simon has given you them as there will be a reason for it. He may suspect an abscess may appear further down the line and wants to nip it in the bud. Is it Zithromax you have been given?

Yep thats the one. Shes had the antibiotics now - is funny how she is a nightmare to feed, but painkillers or antibiotics and she wolfs them down.
Shes been quite fidgety tonight and seems to have figured out how to get out of my feeding hold!
Whilst it sounds bad i think it may be a good sign, as the real Joni is a bit of a terror haha

Hmmn... more problems :(

Shes been quite hard to feed since the antibiotics and painkiller. Just had a feel around her belly and she squeaked, so must be causing a bit of pain to her.
Wonder if she is bloated from the food shes had today? Am a bit concerned as havent really managed to feed her much this afternoon.

my Jerry has had dental problems since January and I'm going back to simon in a week,he is the best.the zithro...... can deplete the appetite, please can i suggest you give pre/pro biotics after the antibiotic, helps to re estabilish the good bacteria 2 hours after antibiotic.maybe still syringe feed if her weight drops or cannot be maintained.simon should be given an MBE for his diligent work.good luck,x

Wow you're a trooper! I never did more than 2 x 15ml syringes of Critical Care with Benji and none of my piggies ever liked it, compared to mushed pellets - even those I would just give 30ml in one sitting (~20m) so I'm wondering how on earth you have the time to do 30 syringes!

mthe zithro...... can deplete the appetite

Ah, I think this probably happened to my Benji as he never really regained his normal weight and kept losing it slowly despite being syringe fed for about 2-3wks post op then appearing to eat normally. He was on antibiotics for about 1.5mths and only off them a week before he got another more serious abscess. Now he's with TEAS and booked for an op Monday and I hope Simon is able to save him as he said it was going to be a very complex and hard op to carry out :(

Sorry to hear about Benji, though he will be in the best hands possible so keep your chin up mate :)

Its 30 syringes, but only 1ml at a time (so only 30ml) :/ I've always been told you feed with small amounts like that, but also i dont think even if i had a bigger syringe i could get them to eat from it. I have to really take my time with Joni otherwise she really squirms her way out. Am finding if i sit her on her bum and lift her torso and head up and feed shes more comfy and is taking the food a bit better.

Today i've managed 20 since 10.00am, but shes a pretty feisty lady so not been easy.

I have read about pro-biotics but not sure where i would get them from here in Coventry. She has eaten a bit of grass by herself, so hoping the antibiotics take care of any of the possible abscesses and she can start eating properly again.

i got mine from vet uk and viovet on internet, pro c from pets at homeyou can order that on line as well.well done for managing to get 30 mls of ccit gets easierthey get used to it.I still give Jerry 45 mls of mushed pellets at night to maintain his weight,he then eats mainly hay during the day.i have to syringe water to him as he will not drink from the water bottle, give 20mls of water 3 x aday.oink oinlk I'm sorry to hear about your Benji that must be difficult.good luck to Dewi and oink oink.x

It's this one. I have used it a few times with Baytril before but I found it just stained the water bottle green and was difficult to clean. I'm not sure it tastes too great to them either and I just stopped using it and I probably ended up throwing it away.

I was told by Kim that they can manage without it and it's not necessary. Rather, it's better to get another piggies caecotrophs and mash it together in a container and feed it to them. They may also just eat another piggies caecotrophs by themselves as Benji did after the abscess surgery.

Thanks for the replies :)

Sorry, has been a busy few days. I'm back to work but finishing half days to go home and care for her. Her weight is staying at a steady 920g-ish, and she is trying to eat small amounts by herself.
I am hopeful the antibiotics are helping to solve the problem with her eating.

Must say its be an exhausting week so far. Staying up as late as i can to get a late feed in, then up first thing in the morning at 6 to make sure i get some food into her before i head to work.
In general she is quite perky, and seems to be slowly returning to her crazy destructive ways !
