For background, my piggie is 4 (5 years old in December), she currently lives on her own due to her sister passing away (at 3 years old due to neurological issues) but has appeared happy and her normal self since this happened (a year ago). Her weight has usually sat at around 960-980g her whole life. She has previously had 1 UTI (now cleared up) and has a small flat fatty lump (tested by the vet) under her belly but not a cause for concern and hasn’t caused any further issues. She doesn’t have any other health concerns and is usually a healthy, happy piggie!

So Wednesday she was completely her normal self, wheeking and eating with no concerns regarding her health.

Thursday morning she completely refused any food and was hiding away, still and almost lethargic, so obviously being concerned I took her straight to the vet that afternoon. After 1 morning of not eating her weight had dropped to 860 which is a drastic weight loss for her. She was also lethargic and not herself.

Vets put her on antibiotics, gave her a gut stimulant jab and sent us away with critical care. Not bloat or any other stand out illnesses. They said a potential UTI but they’re not particularly sure. I fed critical care every 2 hours and on top of the she did start eating her greens that night.

Friday, she began eating again and I still continued with her critical care but she appeared to be in pain with her back legs. Took her back to the vets that afternoon and the vet suspected arthritis, the vet said she seems almost lame in her back legs but she does has use and feeling still. They gave her pain relief via jab and syringe pain relief (anthracam) to take home with us and also weighed her again - 840g so still losing weight.

Come Saturday morning she seemed a bit more perky, came out to eat some pellets, eating her hay and eating all veggies have to her. I am still supplementing her with critical care too. She seems a little more herself so I didn’t feel the need to take her back to the vets again. However when weighed she was 830g.

Come this morning (Sunday) I weighed her again and she was 826g. So even though she seems a bit more herself, she is eating again and I am also supplementing with critical care about (4 times a day and once in the night in the past 24 hours), she is still losing weight?

Any help/advice would be appreciated!
I am at a bit of a loss, super relieved she seems a bit more perky and has her appetite back but just wish she would put weight back on. If she doesn’t put weight on or keep steady weight in the next 24 hours I plan to take her back to the vets. But I’m just concerned as they said if this doesn’t work with all the medication and syringe feeding they don’t have much more they can try.

I’m sorry to hear this.

How much critical care are you getting into her (in ml) each day?
As she is still losing weight it’s usually because she is actually not eating enough hay independently and not enough critical care to maintain.
You need to feed at least 60ml of critical care per day but it could be as much as 100ml.

The aim of syringe feeding is to stabilise a piggy and stop further weight loss, not to gain weight.
Regaining lost Weight takes weeks to months after they are past the illness and sometimes, particularly older piggies, don’t actually regain and instead maintain at a new lower normal.
What is her pain meds dosage?
Is it once or twice a day?
Is it dog or cat version?

Are you giving gut stimulants to her at home? (Or was it only the injection at the vet that one time)?

If she has an infection then antibiotics take several days to start working and the full course would be needed to fully deal with any bacteria.
What antibiotic is she on?

Are you giving a probiotic as well?
A probiotic is recommended 1-2 before or after an antibiotic dose ( never at the same time as) to help settle the gut from the effects of the antibiotic, as antibiotics can upset their gut and appetite.
