Hi all,

I’m stumped. Before I start rambling I will add that I do have an appointment booked at 4:40pm with Simon at the Cat and Rabbit clinic this Wednesday. I’m merely curious and I suppose stressing about the what ifs. I’ve struggled to find any threads/pics of someone experiencing something similiar.

So, a 9 month old boar. Eating, solid weight of around 1.2kg, entire (lives with another boar), good poops, bright. On 1st December morning noticed a bit of squeaking when urinating, a pet owners worst nightmare I was booked to fly to Edinburgh that afternoon! Called Cat @ rabbit clinic clinic, explained symptoms said how quickly it came on, healthy all other way, penis appears sore? But clean. No smegma, no visible sperm rod. They agreed did not feel an emergency, agreed I could give Meloxicam and see how he responds. Said a bladder stone would be very unlikely (and I can’t obviously palpate one). My mum pig watched for me and gave the meloxicam to the best of her ability. I returned 5th December to which the squeaking had stopped. I continued with Meloxicam a further 2 days then stopped.

Fast forward to Boxing Day and I heard him squeak again so looked at penis again. I’m reluctant to keep looking at it, as he’s young, cleans himself and don’t want to make it worse. But again, it looks sore, I expect when he passes urine it burns? Is passing urine and again otherwise well. Immediately restarted with meloxicam and called vet (hence booked appointment). But honestly I’m stumped as to what it is. He doesn’t squeak with every wee, and I’m thankful they’re in my bedroom else I might not have even noticed. I don’t notice that he constantly chews down there as looking at the penis it looks almost self harm like? But as I say he isn’t down there all the time? Praying it’s not some type of tumour? But can’t feel it or see anything. Perhaps an infection of some sort?

Any pigmums experienced the same and had happy outcomes? I’ve not long got him, had hopes to show him a bit as well he’s so bloody beautiful. I had a lot of heartbreak last year with older piggies and I just need some good luck!

Any stories of similar appreciated whilst I lose my mind until Wednesday 😭

Hi

The half-extended penis looks normal to me, but there is either something that is causing the ring of swelling and bloody area or it is from self-biting because of some localised irritation or pain, so you are right to see Simon before the turn of the year because determining what exactly it is is down to him.

Please don't worry about a tumour; they don't usually happen on penises and certainly not at such a young age. You are more likely dealing with some kind of infection and are looking a course of antibiotics/antimicrobials.

If you (any other reader/searcher) have anxiety issues and have tendency to zoom straight into worst case scenarios, you may find this very practical and down to earth guide here helpful so it doesn't spoil your piggy joy: Pet Owners Anxiety - Practical Tips For Sufferers and For Supporters

All the best. Poor boy! Not the nicest place to feel very uncomfortable.

Thank you for your response!

I shall definitely have a look at that link. Ive had so much bad luck with piggies recently that I tend to go straight to worst case scenario 🤦‍♀️ working in veterinary hasn’t helped ease the anxiety either.

That’s hopeful to hear they don’t usually have tumours on the penis itself. I’ve not encountered that before either, but I’ve discovered I usually give Simon the complex/rare cases so really praying this isn’t one of those!

Once again thank you so much. I seem to only reappear on here when I have a mild heart attack over one of my babies 🤣🤦‍♀️ I really need to post something nice for a change.

Here’s some pics of my handsome boy, a tweed. (And his cagemate my 5 year old Stitch💕)

We would like to see more of your piggies indeed! There is still a whole world of germs to pick up if you want to plump for rare or it could be something stuck and causing a problem with extending the penis fully... But we can only guess wildly.

UPDATE- Just thought I would share an update. Had a telephone consult with Simon yesterday after I was advised to email some pictures of the problem across also. Simon said it appears as though it may be a bacterial infection, and we have a plan in place. He cancelled the physical appointment as he said he would only advise the same and having already had him assessed at my place of work, he’s happy that he wouldn’t necessarily discover something horrible. So plan for now is to clean it the one time with dilute iodine and then try applying a barrier cream (Flamazin in this case). If no improvement or worsens then physical appointment and perhaps oral antibiotics, but we all know how antibiotics can affect our piggies so we want to avoid that if we can.

Thank you for the update. That is about in the range of what I though it might turn out to be. But I am not a vet.

If it helps you - flamazine is a cream that contains antibiotics, hence why it is prescription-only (POM) so your boy is getting some topically (directly on the outside spot). ;)

All the best. I hope that there are less complaints from your boy about having his sore diddle played with once it starts feeling better!

Ah poor boy - wonderful uncle Simon has hopefully helped your lovely boy
I hope it starts to work asap 🥰
