Waiting To Call The Vet...

She's still fighting so that's a good sign, here's hoping the vet can give her something that'll help long term whilst she recovers.

Now she is tucking into lettuce and looking pleased with herself. Breathing still bad but I would say slower and marginally improved. She is fighting all the way.
Come on piggy, keep fighting. Were still here with you Hun. Tag Helen if your worried and need advice she will pick her tags up ASAP (as she's lovely) so she wont mind if you keep tagging her I'm sure x

Thank you! How do I tag her ? (Numpty I know!)

You add the @ followed then by their name or start typing Helen10... It will pop up with a list of Helens touch the Helen you need. As in @GuineaSlave

The fluid will be down to the pneumonia. It is possible that the diuretic is wearing off so would be a good idea to get her to the vets for an injection as soon as possible this morning but also ask if you can have oral diuretic to give at home tonight. She will need topping up with fluids while on it though. She will need diuretic for a good few days while the fluid is still there.

Good that she has eaten some lettuce.

Hi Helen

Thank you! Seeing my local vet at 9.20 as an emergency appointment for another injection. The taking her to my usual vet whom is working this afternoon to discuss frusol orally and anything else we need to do. She has nibbled on some hay, some dandelion and some lettuce. I am trying to give her water every few hours. She hates it and fights like mad so being very careful as this Makes her breathing worse.

I guess the laboured breathing will last for a while?

Great your appointment is early. The laboured breathing will continue for a while as it will take some time for the fluid to go and even then she may need to stay on a maintenance dose for a while.

Just get as much water in as you can but I know it is difficult with her breathing being so bad. If you can get any syringe food into her too that would help, but it would need to be little and often and with nothing bigger than a 1ml syringe.

It is pneumonia :-( he does not think she will last the night. He has injected her with frusemide (not sure why he had to inject her) he Wanted to X-ray but only does them under anaesthetic so we agreed it was not sensible. He listened to her chest and you cannot hear her heart well on one side which has changed from this morning. I have her booked with my vet tomorrow afternoon if she lasts. Ray of hope is that we came home and she is eating dandelion which she did not want earlier.

Please send loads of healing vibes, I am so desperately worried. She is such is the sweetest and friendliest of my herd. She is very much a mummies girl and I could not bear to lose her.
Oh poor poor boy, that's so sad. Rip little fella. X

She is fighting it you can tell. She was pretty fit and healthy, so strong, so hopefully that will help her. She is nearly four so has age and strength on her side, as opposed to poor toffee. I think it will be a long night though and I still think it's very much 50/50. Thank goodness I have this week off.
What a lovely way to spend your week off (I couldent think of a better brake myself) x

Hiya

Well the vet was happily surprised she was still with us! Her chest is apparently marginally better. She is clearly very pigged off at having another injection. He did not have any oral frusol so I'll get some this afternoon. Both vets are communicating with each other which is great. I think now he can see how hard we are trying he is a little more open minded and very supportive. I will try to get some more food etc down her. What about metatone? Will that help?

The one thing she is doing is hiccuping very so often. This is really worrying me as the last guinea I had do this duied on my lap due to a heart attack. Is this just her way of trying to clear her chest?

One further quick question. (Sorry!)

She is in an indoor cage on her own in the house at the moment. Their shed is heated, would she be better in the shed (segregated away) but with the others or would you keep her in? I wonder if she may pick up if I let her out during the day so she can see and hear them? Bring her in at night? I cannot give her a friend, she fights them Even when sick and yesterday gave her sister a bloody ear (they have never fought before) so that's not an option sadly so she is alone.

Really sorry she is so poorly, all paws & fingers crossed for her here :) @helen105281 re letting her near the others, I think pneumonia is contagious so I would keep her away from the others until Helen confirms whether she needs to be kept separate.

Thanks poppysmum. Just had her on my lap, she won't take water, can't seem to swallow and gets v v stressed, but put her back and she's nibbling on food. I keep expecting to find her passed on but then she recovers.

@helen105281
sorry Helen, any ideas re getting her to drink. I can get the most difficult guinea to syringe usually but I just cannot with her. Feel like I am choking her and it makes her far far worse. She started hiccuping violently and I thought she was about to die. Literally putting tiny amounts in her mouth and she just won't swallow. She is now eating though. She looks v poorly though. Am fearing the worse.

I have no advice, just want you to know we are thinking of you and sending your little girl lots of love. You are doing so well, good luck at vets this afternoon x

Can she eat cucumber? If so I would try her with that.

Poor angel, if she is anything like Buzz was she will be full of gunk in her throat, he was reaching a lot when he had it. See what the vet says later, if she is getting worse though then I would maybe speak to the vet about making the decision for her. We had to do that with Buzz the second time he had it. They end up drowning in fluid otherwise. Sorry to have to say that, she may surprise you though so see what the next few hours bring.

In answer to your earlier questions, I would keep her inside in the warm and @Poppy'sMum is right when she says it is contagious so she should not go near her friends.

Oh gawd really?! It does seem like water is just staying in her mouth. She sounds 'slurpy' if you know what I mean. I think you are right re making a decision. I don't want her to suffer or die an awful death but I want to give her every chance too. It's so hard.

I will keep an eye on the others now too. In some respects it's good I haven't spent much time with them then! Thank you.

It is not a certainty that the others will get it. Rosie had it and none of the other pigs in the room got it but when Buzz had it we lost Beanbag who was his companion a few weeks later from it (though that was the time Buzz got through it). I would get the vet to give you their honest opinion on her prognosis later.

Thank you Helen. Sat cuddling her now. She's sat cuddled under my neck. I think I know which way things will go, want to make the most of her.

Bless her, going to send you my work email in case you need to ask anything this afternoon. I usually check the forum before leaving work but am finishing slightly early today as have the vets (just a heart med review).

Thank you so much Helen x

I've got no advice to give but just want to say I hope your little girl can pull through! Thinking of you both today x

Thank you everyone. I am not hopeful of a good outcome but you never know, I will be praying for a miracle but her quality of life is so important. Bless her she is trying to eat and doing one chew, a breath, another chew etc. it's so sad to see. Cannot stop crying so I will look a sight when I get to the vets ! So glad I am not working today.
