Advice on Spaying a six year old piggy

One of honey's 4 meds is now complete! Just 3 remaining! And she's starting to take them like a trooper! (Better late than never?) she's looking very bright and her piggy kisses are coming back 😅😅😅 IMG_0908.webp
She's currently a stable weight of 853g so good stuff. However one question... she's picked up some rather odd chewing habits? She's never been a huge chewer, apart from on cardboard tubes, but all of a sudden Ive caught her nibbling on puppy pads... her hanging chewtoys/boredom breakers.. her pigloo..? Where has this come from? It's not even a small amount with the boredom breakers, today I found one completely destroyed that has been in her cage before Treacle even passed! She has never even shown interest in it before, this was treacles favourite toy 😂😂😂 what's happened? Probably just the fact she can now be bothered to move now she doesn't have all that additional weight 😂 Bless her 🙈

Now that is a face of a guilty pig that has copied her younger cage mate with jumping into the hay rack... she really does feel like a different pig, her feet could barley lift the floor before now she's leaping into the hay rack 😂😂 (don't worry I checked her wound, it's she hasn't done damage) what a !

She is so so so sooooo adorable! Look at that face! I'm so glad she's well on the mend :woot:
Such a guilty face! She knew she wasn't meant to be in there! Got knows how she's all of a sudden become a hurdle jumper 😂😂 but thank you, it's so nice to see her playing again, but I thought her "lazy ways" were just old age, can't believe how much of an impact the cysts were having on her. I'm so thankful to have such a great vet so local to me 💖

Aw, so glad she's on the mend! She's looking fabulous, and very lucky to have such green hay!
I bulk bought this hay from timothyhay.co.uk was £20 and its lasting me so long, best £20 Ive spent considering the old Burgees hay I sued was £6 a bag and for the equivalent weight it would've cost me £60!

Guys I'm actually a little concerned about Honey again, like she seems fine in her self but her poos are just not normalising, and they aren't consistent in anyway, sometimes they're kind of shaped but soft so when she stands on them they're going all on her feet, other times they have like a string connecting them? Then they're small one minute, big another... she has her check up today at 10 but we are only seeing a nurse.. she had her last metacam on Friday night so could his still be causing effects now?

Hope the vet trip went well.
Jemimah's poos took a while to settle back to normal after her spay so hopefully Honey's will too.

How did Honey get on, sometimes when a pig has an operation it can take up to 10 days for everything to return back to normal, hopefully that's the only issue for Honey.

the vet trip was okay. They are very happy with her progress and she's a good weight, they felt her gut and said it felt so much better than before the op, as the poops aren't watery they weren't concerned and believe it's probably just taking her longer to settle due to it all be touched in the op and the after op meds. So now that she's finished all her medications (Sunday) hopefully now her gut can start getting the right bacteria built back up and everything normalise herself again. But they don't want to see her back unless imcomcerned of she deteriorates which is good news!

Just a question guys, Honeys weight has always fluctuated quite a bit but before her op I knew her bracket that was okay for her... she is sitting between 834g-850g now and obviously I would like her to put on a little more, but is this likely in such an old piggy and after such a big op?
When she went in for her op the first time (the one that got cancelled) she was about 1000g, she then lost that great deal over the weekend went to 943g ish, then after the op 833g... ideally I'd like her to put the 57g back on that she lost over that weekend, then all that's lower is the loss of her cysts and uterous etc... is this likely/possible?

I would be looking for her to maintain her usual bracket before her op. I wouldn't generally expect her to gain anymore weight

Is this still the case even though she lost a great deal before her op?

(Thank you for responding)

It's different for each piggy but if she went to 833 after op that is pretty much the same bracket. I wouldn't worry if she gains more just as long as she's not overweight (from feeling heft rather than weighing)

Hey guys back again 🙄😂 I'm a little concerned about Honey, from Friday I have been mainly at my boyfriends, however I popped home yesterday at around 5 to check on the piggies, they both seems fine, Weighed Honey, (I normally do this of a morning but thought a weigh in the day is better than none at all), I'm currently weighing her every day just to make sure she is stable, everything seems fine, topped up the hay, fresh water the normal.. and went on my way, can I note my mum has also been checking in on them throughout this time. Well anyway, I just got home, and Honeys poops seem to be much more irregular shape than they were, however still not runny (which is good) and I weighed her, and she's gone from 836g last night, to 826g tonight, is this a large drop of a simple variation? I'm just not very happy that she's gone below her post-op weight, so is now below the 833g post op, she's eating her veggies right now, tugging about at them with Willow, and seems normal in herself, am I just worrying too much?

Also, does anyone have any ideas about what may help her soft poops? I did hold back her veggies for a few days, but this didn't change anything, would it be beneficial to give her a probiotic?

She's currently having some piggy cuddles, she hasn't had them in a while because I didn't want to pull her about too much 💛

I am following this thread carefully as your experience has decided me (along with vet advice) to have my 6 year old spayed to deal with her ovarian cysts.
Honey’s blip may well be sulks- hope it’s nothing to worry about

Wow that actually means a lot that you find this thread useful, I'll be honest, initially I was keeping it for selfish reasons with not knowing what was right for Honey, but it's amazing that it can help others at the same time who may be in a similar situation. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't have done anything differently, but I would be lying if I said it's been easy, stress free, and a walk in the park... especially with that huge blip over that weekend before the Monday when she had the op! These tiny fluffs can cause so much stress, anxiety and worry 😰 But as people adviced me, you know your pet the best, and if you're willing to help them along the way with recovery, and are prepared (and have an account on this amazing forum, who I actually wouldn't have got through this without) I'm sure everything will go as hoped. My mum said to me before the op, if things do go as hoped, it wasn't meant to be, and think that's so important to remember 💖

Bonus photo: the face of a guilty pig that just peed of their slave, that's the que that she wants to go back...

Aw, that's what my mousey likes to do - no warning typical!

10 grams is not a huge amount if I'm honest. It can be the difference of a full/empty bladder.

Although with Toby I get excited about any weight gain or just 10 grams. It's really difficult to get old pig's to put lost weight back on. My Toby is currently 750 grams and he eats everything!

Unfortunately I can't help the stools, when did she finish her medicine?

Once I put it into perspective I did think 10 grams isn't that bit a deal, but i think i was more concerned she'd gone below her post op weight, I'll check her in the morning and see if she's any better (as that's the usual time I weigh her too 🤞

And no worries, she finished her medications completely a week ago today but some of them finished by like the Friday
