Advice on Spaying a six year old piggy

Think that's the best idea weighing her in morning at the same time. You'll probably have noticed weighing her daily the weight can vary a little bit.

I'm glad I'm not the only one being a paranoid pet owner and weighing everyday!

Agree with Flintstones, I think the difference between a full and empty bladder is more than 10g so don't panic. Just keep monitoring her

It's normally a weekly thing, so Honey is probably like fgs when is the weekly routine coming back, I'm sure she doesn't mind too much though, until her poops are more normal I will probably continue to monitor her weight regularly, you never know

Okay thank you! Do you have any advice on what may help her poops normalise? They've been off for around 2 weeks now

In what way are they an irregular shape? Are they too soft or are they teardrop shaped?

If they are too soft I would take her off veggies until 24 hours after they have normalised. If they are teardrop shaped then I seem to recall hearing/reading that this could be dehydration but please don't quote me on it lol

They're irregular shaped, but not to the point of complete irregularity, they are just rather soft, and they do have like a "tear drop" end, but I'm wondering if this is just where they are so soft, that they aren't like "rounding off"... Ive tried the whole stopping the veggies, I actually done it for 3 days, but it didn't seem to make a difference

I've used probiotics in the past when 2 of mine have been on antibiotics. It helps to balance the gut flora. It's a long thread and I can't remember whether Honey was one AB's or not.

@Lady Kelly do you have any experience with pro-biotics? Do you know if these would be beneficial?

Definitely wouldn't hurt to try. I've used them before but the most recent pig I tried them with avoided it like the plague. He's hard to medicate (doesn't like the syringe) and wouldn't drink water that had them in. I tried sprinkling on veg and he turned his nose up at that too!

Yes she did have antibiotics, and actually was on those a day before she had her op to cover the possibility that she may have got a UTI, is this possible to be the cause? What probiotic did you use?

Honey isn't a huge fan of the syringe either but I was cruel to be kind 😅 Even though, towards the end of her medications she was actually taking them relatively well! 😂

I used Pro-C its about a fiver from Pets at Home. I put a pinch in a bit of water and then syringed it in. Both Christian and the Ever Beautiful Betsy loved it. Betsy loved Baytril too (she is a straaaaaaaaange piggy). Christian gave me a look of "wtf was that?!?!?!" when I first had to give him Baytril and then only tolerated it cos he knew he was getting Metacam after it (he is def a Metacam junkie!)

Did you find that this pro-c did the job? Did you see benefits? And oh god, well I think the drugs Honey had has turned her head a bit loopy, she now just eats whatever, anything that she shouldn't eat... chloroplast... puppy pads... 🙄🙄😂😂

All I can say is that when they were on the Baytril and had Pro-C they didn't lose their appetites like I've read a lot of piggies do on Baytril.

Okay I'll try and pick some up today and just give it a go, thank you x

I've never had a piggy lose their appetite on baytril. I think most occasions it happens due to the illness rather than the medication.

Either way irregular poops there is something disturbed in the guts so a helping hand through probiotics is not going to do any harm

Today we had a trip for our puppies second jab, I briefly mentioned Honey and the lovely vet gave me some fibreplex (?) and if her poops do not normalise in 2-3 days to take Honey back to see her, hopefully this helps her 😊

Honeys weight has continued to decline, currently weighing 803g... lord knows what's going on inside her... she seems to be fine in herself, eating her veggies, running around with willow, cleaning herself etc.. just wish she could be back to normal 😥 I'm wondering if whatever is going on with her gut, is causing her not to take in nutrients from the food? Is this possible? Her poops actually seems so much better this morning (she didn't have her poops all over her feet either) but since then, they've become soft once more 😪

Back to the vets we go I think, would rather be safe than sorry 😥

Always best to play on the safe side. Hopefully it's just a blip

She is booked in for tomorrow at half 10, I'm at volunteering and so my mum will be taking her, however since she had her evening veggies and the fibreplex the vet gave us yesterday, she's seems even brighter than she did earlier, I'm going to weigh her before bed and see if the veggies have bumped her appetite and therefore weight 🤞

I'm rather sorry for this nudity this time of night, (and sorry about the relatively grubby state of her, Ive been using animal wipes to keep her as clean as possible but I'm not gonna stress her out too much for the sake of removing some grub, once she's fully better I'll give her a bum wash 😅.. but Ive just given Honey a check and she seems to have some type of mucus? What is this? Obviously I will get my mum to ask the vet, and I took this photo for proof as it's very unlikely it'll be there at the time of appointment, but just curious? Also I had a thought, could the hormone implant she originally had be confusing her body now she's had the spay? Or would it just have now effect at all now?

Veggies definitely bump weight, happens with my guys all the time. Best to weigh at the same time everyday but I'm sure you know that already.

Yeah, after her op I was weighing her twice a day, once when I woke up and again before I went to bed, continued this until she was stable, then went to once a day, but now with this gradual weight loss the last few days I'm going to start twice a day again until she's increased again a little...

So basically my mum took honey to the vets for me, and she saw a locum vet, all my mum got was "your daughter needs to get in the real world, she's an old guinea pig" and "honeys feet are sore, I suggest you tell your daughter to change her bedding" can I add Honeys feet have been mentioned to the head exotic vet multiple times because I too had noticed this, and Kate (the vet) explained this can happen in older guinea pigs when they sit around more and tend to sit more "backwards" on their feet than younger ones.. anyway.. my mum said they were on fleece and the vet turned around and said "that's probably why, she's just sitting in her wee" to which my mum snapped back and explained the whole wicking process 😅 my mum basically got the impression that this vet saw Honey as "just a guinea pig"

She questioned what I was feeding her, and basically was implying I was starving her, this is the reason she's loosing weight, also said "I do hope she's got endless hay" to which my mum said "yes and it's a very good fresh hay"

When my mum was telling me this I was literally getting angrier by the second, just because Honey is old, doesn't mean I'm going to leave her in her cage to die and loose weight endlessly...

Fuming is not the word 😡
Sorry rant over 😅

What an awful experience for your Mum and Honey! Sometimes locum vets can be very good other times sadly they are somewhat lacking as seems to be the case this time.

I would alert the vets practice to this attitude. If they have a specialist there I am pretty sure they won't want to be using any locums with that attitude going forward

That’s awful. I definitely agree about letting the practice know about this.
My mum did say to the receptionists how awful this vets attitude was, and they basically gave the look of "we've already had others complain" so I think it's fair to say, they won't be having her back... absolutely disgusting of her... I'm actually so angry and upset, Honey and Willow are everything to me, and the way she was implying my lack of care towards Honey just makes me fuming... I think she thought by the fact my mum took her to the vets, that I was some 10 year old who was incapable and still at school, not the case, and nor is it her place to make that assumption and judge... I work hard to supply what I can for my piggies 😡 Mum got the impression that she was a money grabbing private vet who didn't really give a toss

The only thing she did suggest is to take a urine sample from Honey, just to make sure there's no infection... this wasn't even my concern, we booked her in to the vet for her soft stools and weight loss 🙄
