Hello all,

I did some research on bedding but there seems to be a lot of mixed information that's making me confused. Firstly, is newspaper safe to use as bedding? If not, what safe options are there to use as bedding besides fleece? (Safe woods, paper, etc.)I am not allowed to use fleece/towels for specific reasons.

Thanks guys!

Where are you based @Piggiekisses ? We have members from all over the world so it is useful to know whether you are in the UK/US or elsewhere.

A lot of forum members buy their bedding online - but sometimes there is a local supplier - which cuts out delivery costs .

Are your pigs inside or out? Mine are outside and have a layer of newspaper, then straw and then hay.

Many people will tell you not to use straw but I have to to keep them warm. If I use hay they will eat through it and end up with no bedding and be cold. In the winter they also have snuggle safe heat pads in the sleeping area to keep them extra warm :)

I'm actually from Canada! Haha, I wonder how many piggies are from here?! Anyway, I'm a student in a stranded city so all I have is internet and a horse shop :/

What woodshavings are safe?! I heard cedar and pine is not safe?

any aromatic wood is not good for guinea pigs - so, cedar and pine woodshavings are a no. The only time pine should ever be used ( for hideys etc ) is if it's kiln dried. There are some brands of woodshavings which declare they are pet safe - but I'd be careful if I were you and only use ones that guarantee they are safe for guinea pigs. A lot of forum members have gone off Megazorb as they have found it it dusty.
If you have an equine supplier near you , it would be worth looking at the hemp based equine beddings . The one I use ( in the UK) is called Aubiose. They need to be unperfumed though - I know some equine beddings and poultry beddings have essential oils added .

Wow canada! I would find out what the equine shop stocks or can get hold of as it will save on your postage cost if they add a product to their current order from their wholesalers

Thanks so much! I'll have to look for these :) is newspaper alone dangerous to use? I had a friend suggest this but I'm apprehensive .

Newspaper's OK - I don't use it as I've got a lino base to my hutch and find it easier to spot clean using bedding only
