Rushing Liquorice to the vets!

Sophie is the only one who does this. Even Peronel and Amelia Jane who are my first piggies do not do that. She will then bite though and look surprised when I squeal in pain!

Treacle licks, and will spend ages sniffing my nose :)) Humbug nibbles, but jumps into my hands instead.. BonBon.. well she's the only one without special abilities, but is fun to watch running about popcorning.. she's the Lewis Hamilton of the guinea pig family :)

Aww thanks. I am crazy about mine. I cannot even be out all day as I miss them so much! Silly I know!

Well, none the wiser as to what's wrong. Have agreed with the vet to give her another week on the baytril and eye drops and re-assess..
He *thinks* it's one of two things.. Let's start with this, it's not the eye itself, he has an idea it's to do with the tear duct. He gave a close examination of her eye and says the tissue around the tear duct looks slightly swollen. So there could be infection trapped in there, he wants to flush it out. How do you flush a tear duct out on a Guinea Pig? He also wants to GA her to have a closer look at her mouth, he tried again today but she had a mouthful of green stuff (food) again..
He may take x-rays of her head to see if the teeth are ok. I know she's eating fine, surely the first indication would have been a loss of appetite? What do you think guys? At this stage even if her eye was removed, if it is the tear duct, it won't solve the issue..
On a better note, she's happy enough in herself, and i'm considering managing her problem if we don't get to the bottom of what's wrong, with the drops long term, as long as she doesn't get any more trouble with her eye/tear duct..

My bunny had his tear ducts flushed out. They had to do it under anastetic as he became so distressed. They put a syringe of solution on it and it is flushed that way. He did have to have this done a few times and it helped him a lot.

I would have thought her teeth are okay as she is eating but my bunnys eye problems were caused by teeth so maybe they are pressing up into the tear ducts.

Oh dear :(

COME ON LITTLE LIQUORICE XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

all paws and fingers crossed they can figure out what is happening with her eye XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

More vibes to Liquorice and hugs to you. x

Update:

Eye has improved, but needed a change in meds, so off the baytril (yahhh!) and back on the tiacil (a tad doubtful, but as lesion on eye now healed, shouldn't interfere with it), and an alternative to piggyfan's suggestion (didn't have that particular med but something similar - see flush tear duct thread)..

Giving her a week on these two drops, then re-visit the vet..
She was ever so slightly peeved about going again, she's taken to fluffying herself up and going quiet when ever she see's the pet carrier..

Poor little thing getting sick of going to the vets. She is very clever to know the carrier means she is going to the vet. At least she is off the nasty baytrill. That is got to be a good sign.

awwwww dear little Liquorice whee hope these meds help you gorgeous XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

I was on a late yesterday and had to do an early today (work shifts..) Got home at quarter to 11 last night and gave Liquorice her eye drops... knowing that there would be only 5 hours between treatments, I decided they would be too close together, I always give 12 hours apart..
Bathed her eye before I left for work, worrying the next treatment would be too late in the day (3ish).. Got home to a GP with a sticky eye :( White sticky stuff made it unable for her to open her eye, so out came the saline solution, and eye drops..
She seems some what depressed tonight, not sure if this has more to do with the vet visit, as she was the same for a day or so after last time, she really hates it.. gave her some probiotics as her tummy was grumbling a lot, so suspected tummy ache, the achilles's heal probably from the baytril despite the probiotics..
Gave her a love, and spent some time with her, she quickly picked up, and enjoyed some broccoli and cucumber.. She's not really entertaining her nuggets, so tempting her with other favourites to keep her spirits up..
I'm starting to worry she's getting to the point where she's had enough :(
Can't blame her really, i'd feel the same if my eye was constant discomfort for weeks on end.. we've had some low points and high points.. the other day she was popcorning again, I really hope I see her do that again..
It's a low day today, please send some pick up vibes for her..
Is it possible the bad stuff in her tearduct is dripping down her throat causing this setback? She's otherwise pooping ok, eating timothy hay, veg and drinking..

It's a rollercoaster isn't it? She's picking up again, much happier, sleeping near the food bowl and water bottle, nooming on her veggies with enthusiasm again.
My only guess is having 15hours of no antibiotics at such a critical stage in her recovery, left her in a lot of discomfort, plus she must be getting the taste of whatever is in her tear duct down the back of her throat, putting her off her food..
I've been continuing the probiotics to help settle her tummy and it seems to be working, so fingers crossed guys! :)

She sounds like she is doing so well. She is clearly a fighter. I am so pleased to hear she is eating well. That is a great sign.

She's quite perky this morning, digging a whole in her bed of hay, looking for the nicest bits, they all looked up at me and instantly thought of food, squeeking at me, Treacle going into begging position.
Liquorice's eye was a bit gunky, but i've noticed it only seems to happen overnight, never during the day. She winges when I do her drops, gets the fact I keep all her meds in the fridge irritates her eye when they first go in, but then she's fine after, licking my hand :)

Aww licking your hand after means she knows you are being her friend. That is so cute.

Well done Liquorice x)x)x)
Keep on munching away and be good when getting those eye drops, they really will help you sweetie XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

She appears to hold her eye back more on this treatment, BUT the stickiness is a lot less, the eye itself looks a lot better, i'm not sure if the volteral is actually working for her, it's supposed to be a painkiller and a anti-inflammatory, but i'm yet to see whether it does either for her.
Her eating is almost back to normal, the food bowl is nearly empty and the water bottle has gone down a lot (she's one of those piggies, who chews a nugget and gets a drink to wash it down, it's really quite sweet lol!)..
I think she eats more nuggets than the others, as when she's not eating well, the nuggets don't go down that much, but when she is, she practically lives next to the food bowl, and loves it when I put a fresh lot in (runs over and watches :)))
I have noticed at different parts of the day her eye is fully open, but it's usually about 4 hours after treatment. I bathe her eye in saline solution 3/4 times a day now, whilst i'm off (got 2 weeks).
I think she's loving the attention really, she'll happily sit on me, and be hand fed her fav veg :)) Licking my hand to within an inch of it's life! I bought some herbs yesterday for them all, and a wooden log that hooks to the side of the cage with a mixture of carrots and alfa.. It's half gone this morning! Think i've found another treat for them with the added benefit as a chew for their gnashers.

The attack of the Guinea Pigs!

Still battling to clear her tear duct, much less discharge than before, although still not there yet. Her eating is back to normal, and she's becoming cheeky with the probiotic syringe. For a few days she's really been fighting the eye drops, but today she's accepting them better, so they must be starting to work for her.
I decided to give Humbug some probiotics as she had trouble passing droppings last night, so thought she'd benefit having some. Several times, she tried snatching the syringe and running off with it, Liquorice as partner in crime, coming over and doing the same :))
Plus side, they both got a full syringe of it, quite happy to take it, Liquorice, because she saw her friend having it, so thought, it must be valuable then..
Her eye, is still ok, I keep watching for the reaction we got before, we're now on day 6, and up to now, no sign of it, so fingers crossed we'll make it to thurs, when she goes for a check up..

awwwwwwwwwwww bless her this is just fantastic news!
Wheeeeeky loves from the girls and heaps of little kisses for sweet Liquorice XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

He he! :)) She just cleaned her eye and the white stuff didn't stick around!
:(|)
(just completed the bathing and drops).. she and Treacle are sat on the bed munching cucumber.. she's just gone for a wash, and as usually the cleaning fluid comes out, but this time didn't go into overdrive like it has been!
Her eye, I would say is fully open tonight, and that's a first!
